(1)Growing:
We grow ramie with the roots
that are cut into sections
(about 15cm/section), and then
bind three roots as a truss,
leaving budding part upwards.
Ramie has strong viability. If
just for observation, it can be
plant freely, but is not
suggested in planting in too
much sands. If used as weaving
material, ramie should be grown
in fertilized soil with sunshine
and humid environment.
The
soil must be loosened before
planting. Arrisways dig a hole
of 10-15cm with hoe, put bundled
ramie roots in the hole (budding
part upwards) and cover the
roots with soil.
Because ramie would extend
horizontally during growth,
proper space should be kept in
planting, maintaianing about
70-80 cm between two ramie
roots.
(2) Cutting:
When the sprout reaches 15-20cm
in height, break the stick or
cut it at the bottom to force
side bud to continuously grow
out of the ramie root in soil
and start to extend
horizontally. Meanwhile, start
to fertilize the soil.
(3)
Collection:
Ramie yarn extract can keep
unbroken when the ramie stick
becomes mature and presents
marron red. 2-3 times of ramie
cutting are required from
planting root to when the
material can be used by weavers
(mature and present marron
red->ramie cutting process). The
3rd or 4th time of collected
ramie can be counted as useful
material of weaving.
It may need about 6-8 months
from first growth of ramie to
when the plant can be collected
as weaving material, and it
won’t take much time to get
mature for those have long been
planted in field, which can be
collected once a quarter and
about 3-4 times a year.
