ˇ§I feel the best thing I did in my life is bringing my wife from Shangahi to Taiwan .ˇ¨

After listening to Andy about our intention and content of interview, grandpa Chang, Ping complimented what we did was very meaningful. He also said we are ˇ§the powerful next generationˇ¨ and ˇ§the hope of nationˇ¨. We felt flattered but what he said was a great encouragement.

Grandpa Chang was born in Pujiang Jejiang. Pujiang county was famous for its arts, especially painting. Looking at our confusing faces, grandpa Chang told us with smile, ˇ§my hometown also produces the famous King-Hua ham.ˇ¨

(you should've told us earlier, then we would know earlier.)

Before grandpa Chang coming to Taiwan , he lived with his parents and younger brother. After the civil war, only grandpa Chang came to Taiwan . His father worked at the court for the government. During the great culture revolution, his father was requested to write a confession everyday for three months. He stopped writing one day as he thought ˇ§I could not write under my consciousness!ˇ¨ Then he was forced to do ˇ§labor transformingˇ¨ jobˇXbuilding the reservoir. The reservoir was built by bare hands but machine. You had to carry rocks and sands to earn a bamboo stick for one load. No food if not enough bamboo sticks were collected. Grandpa Chang's father was tortured to death in the end.

Japan surrendered in 1945. A friend of grandpa Chang was sent to handle the Taiwan takeover. Grandpa Chang was curious about Taiwan , so he came to Kaoshiung in July, 1948 for three more months since then. He liked Kaoshiung and thought ˇ§ Taiwan was such a beautiful island.ˇ¨ In the end of 1948, the civil war was getting intense and he was pushed to get married with Ms. Yang, Bau-Jen in Shanghai ; he was 21 years old. He brought the newly-wed wife to Taiwan in March 1949, and worked at the Port of Kaoshiung . He thought this was the ˇ§critical turning point of his lifeˇ¨ while recalling all the above.

Not long after arriving Taiwan , he entered the 21th term of Police Officer School as it was reopened in Taiwan ; prior to graduation in 1952, he passed special exam and passed the entrance examination for senior government employees in 1953.

ˇ§ China was taken over, and we didn't have anything in Taiwan , no money or land. So we could only study hard to find a job.ˇ¨ Grandpa Chang told us why he ˇ§likedˇ¨ taking exams.

(If we have the examination experience like grandpa Chang, we will not be afraid of the basic exam of academic capability.)

As a policeman has to communicate with the public at the first line, language skill is an important tool. Grandpa said that he had some talent in language, so after half year of hard study, he could chat with local residents without problem. He even earned the champion of Taiwanese speech contest.

Grandpa Chang saw her mother again in Hong Kong in 1990 after 41 years of separation. Four years later, he also brought her mother in Taiwan for the Chinese New Year and stayed for one month. However, his mother could not used to the life here and also missed the other sun (grandpa's younger brother) in China as well as her friends and relatives in the hometown. She decided to go back China at the end.

Grandpa and grandma Chang have lived in Taiwan for sixty years. He are used to the life style in Taiwan and like the purity and friendliness of Taiwan people, so they don't plan to go back China .

ˇ§Our home is here.ˇ¨ Grandpa Chang said so.
