Foundation
As Dr. Chi-Chun Liu first learned from newspapers that the aboriginal tribes in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County were short of medical resources, he went to there and offered free medical treatment and on December 17, 1995, founded the Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps (TRMPC). Based on altruism, sharing, cooperation and inheritance advocated by non-religious and non-profit NGOs, and with the aim of "sending health to the mountains" and "medical treatment without borders," he called on his fellow citizens aspiring to serve in remote regions across Taiwan and in developing countries to form a humanitarian and emergency medical service team made up of medical and general volunteers, which is the best example of "Medical Service without Borders."

Origin of name
The establishment of the TRMPC had nothing to do with religion, and its base is not in Luzhu District, Kaohsiung City. Choosing the word "Root" in the name was that bamboo groves were often found on his way to free services in mountainous areas of Taiwan, and that it symbolizes modesty as it is hollow inside and signifies learning spirit as it grows in sections, one after another, with a knot between each one. The charity started in Taiwan and extends like a road that goes on forever. The English words "Taiwan Root" (臺灣路竹) not only sound like Chinese pronunciation, but also symbolize that its medical services are rooted in Taiwan, start from Taiwan, and then are offered all over the world.

Emblem
The emblem of the TRMPC features the character “竹” (bamboo) in oracle bone script, modelled on the Red Cross one. At the same time, with red as its primary color, it symbolizes blood and love, which burns with infinite devotion. TRMPC volunteers are characterized by two features: independence and being able to work under pressure, said Dr. Liu.
