Bring Changhua Raoping Hakka Back To Life –Two Years of Oasis Development in the Desert
Mrs. Qiu told us that in a research done in 2012, it indicated that at least four hundred thousands of people resided in Changhua were Hakka, half of which were Raoping Hakka, and yet, the language Raoping Hakka were absent for half century. She felt it a pity if people let it die away and do nothing about it, so she decided to do something. However, it was a rough journey at the very beginning – she could not get any help from Literacy and History books. Changhua County Qualified Teachers Workshop (彰化縣客語師資研習) and basic advanced level of Hakka Workshop only taught her Si Xian accent (四縣腔) , and that frustrated her. Finally, she decided to turn to herself for help. Using the DVDs certified by Hakka Affair Council(客委會) and resources on Love Hakka website (哈客網站) , she obtained high-intermediate level of Raoping accent certificate and advanced level of Taiwanese certificate within nine months. In the following year, she made a further progress by obtaining yet another certificate from Hakka Affair Council and became the only Raoping accent Master in Changhua County.

A series of Raoping Hakka revival activities had then been launched. According to Mrs. Qiu, Raoping Hakka courses had been offered in different places since September, 2013, such as in student club, parent-child five-month courses, and early childhood Hakka learning courses in Jing Siou Elementary School, Raoping Hakka courses in Wu Feng Community and Yong Jing Community in Puxin. In cooperation with another Hakka Master from Zhuolan, she compiled eight textbooks. She also taught hundreds of people and among them, 300 people obtained six-accents Hakka certificates and 4 of them got intermediate Hakka certificate. Mrs. Qiu’s husband Mr. Yang was one of them.

Her revival journey had presumed with her actively participating in Raoping Hakka Association of Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli, composed articles on Raoping Hakka, took an in-depth travel to Guangdong where Raoping Hakka was rooted, joined Hakka activities held nationally or by Hakka Affair Council, instructed parents and children in competing in national Hakka contest twice and won prices, becoming the most dynamic Raoping Hakka parent-child team. She had also been invited to take to the stage by four organizations before and after Chinese New Year. For example, she had taken part in New Year’s Eve Performance on Yong Jing Street, World Mother Tongue Day on February, 2016, Hakka Week in Jing Siou Elementary school, national Hakka day activities and so on. You can also find her constantly on TV or in newspapers. To wrap up, Mrs. Qiu’s spirit and accomplishment of reviving Raoping Hakka is to be applauded. Many were moved by her, and she is definitely the role model of the Junior Corp.
