Growth

”Daddy, I’m Xiaowei, how are you? Take good care of yourself!”
”Daddy, my teacher said drinking is not good for health, drink no more or drink less!”

Once at the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF), Mommy Wu let Xiaowei talk with his father through the phone.  Xiaowei greeted his father seemingly like a little big man…….

01Thanks to the efforts and persistence of Mommy Wu, Xiaowei was transferred to the township kindergarten.  In the beginning, Xiaowei was often a naughty boy in class and a troublemaker among the children.  This caused much hassles to the teacher and the school “ At that time, the teacher almost came down with depression and the principal hoped to transfer Xiaowei to another kindergarten so as to avoid undermining the right to education of other children.” Thanks to the cooperation of other teachers, Xiaowei improved remarkably.  We then found Xiaowei had no developmental delay and hyperactivity but lack of guidance and education.  Xiaowei was in fact a smart child with good memory and a pleasing personality, seemingly a little big man.

Once at the Taiwan Fund for Children and Family (TFCF) Mommy Wu was deeply touched by Xiaowei’s greeting to his father through the phone who reminded latter not to drink alcohol or drink less and less for the sake of health…….. “An abandoned and neglected child, having no complaints but filled with love and gratitude at heart; this is unthinkable in the eyes of an adult.”  Thinking of Xiaowei’s greeting and advice to his father, we could not help but keep pondering who cares whom?

02Soon after divorce of the parents, Xiaowei’s younger brother was fostered to Sweden.  Later, the natural father also thought of fostering Xiaowei.  The Taiwan Fund for Children and Family (TFCF) matched a Chinese American parents in the United States.  After a year exchanging letters and pictures back and forth, a couple of meetings and with assistance from Mommy Wu, Xiaowei gradually got familiarized with his new parents.

03On the day of departure, Xiaowei, Mommy Wu and the new parents had lunch together and got familiarized.  Afterwards, Xiaowei carried the toys and books prepared by Mommy Wu, as well as the love and care in the course of growth, and boarded the car of the new foster parents.  Looking through the window, the eyes of Xiaowei and Mommy Wu reddened.  Looked like a little big man, Xiaowei was strong and firm but tears rolled down the cheek of Mommy Wu while waving hands of farewell.  Farewell to this naughty boy, and farewell to the first experience of a fostering family for 2 years and 8 months, and farewell to the deeply touched accompaniment of growth…….
