Hang Chi Memorial Building was completed in 2011. It is now open to the public. Member of the Japanese Royal family visited the site during Japanese rule.

Crown prince Hirohito sailed to Taiwan from Japan by warship in 1923. At that time, the Government-General of Formosa celebrated the prince’s visit by building many monuments and houses. These structures all remain as tourist attractions.

Hang Chi Memorial Building was built with money raised by local people and government officers to celebrate Crown prince Hirohito’s visit. It’s now used as much needed space for performances, town hall meetings and special classes.

Hang Chi Memorial Building has been rezoned as commercial space for last twenty-two years. It is now one of the most meaningful and memorable buildings in the minds of the people of Douliou.

The building was damaged badly due to the 921 earthquake in the year 1999. The Yunlin Government has declared the structure as a historical heritage site in 2001.  It was also given a new name -The Hang Chi Memorial Building- after restoration efforts were completed. Also in 2001, at the request of the Yunlin government, TAE (Taiwanese artist ensemble) helped introduce the history and significance of the grounds to the public, as well as help manage the creative space now part of the popular community center.

Taiwanese artist ensemble is a new professional performing troupe. The collective includes artist from various styles which touch the audiences through beautiful and creative performances.
