¡¶The LOGO of TNR
|
Patty, a girl from Germany, has lived in a community in Taipei for twenty years. Several years ago, she saw the community always filled with stray dogs. To solve the problem, she and her neighbor, Mr. Lai, who is an artist, started the activity of TNR to decrease the number of stray dogs. They caught the stray dogs to the vet, neutered them, and the release them at the same place as they caught them. They put on red collars on the stray dogs¡¦ necks. In the beginning, some neighbors opposed this activity. They complained about excrements all over the ground, so Patty and Mr. Lai prepared a box where there are a bag and a pair of tongs, some newspapers for people to clean animal excrements. They also prepared some bowls for people to feed the stray dogs. The neighbors who used to oppose the activity changed their attitudes and chose to be on her side after they discovered the number of stray dogs lasted the same. The efforts Patty and Mr. Lai made tell everyone to use the right method to solve the problems of stray dogs.

There are about two million stray animals in Taiwan. The number of them is always rising up. What¡¦s the basic reason? Lisa, a Taiwan Animal Protection volunteer, points out several reasons.
She said, ¡§People in Taiwan are used to letting their dogs run free but they don¡¦t neuter them. The dogs always mate and give birth to many dogs outside. This leads to more and more stray dogs. Besides, some keepers of puppy mills want to benefit a lot of money from selling many dogs. They use purebred dogs to mate and breed. The incest breeding results in many disabled dogs. They litter those disabled dogs in the mountains. This causes worse and worse situations.¡¨
The main reason of all is that people in Taiwan think it¡¦s not good to neuter animals. As a matter of fact, TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) is the correct method to deal with the problem of stray dogs. Many countries have used this method for a long time. TNR not only keeps the animals health but also keep the ecological balance in this area.
Finally, she emphasizes the importance of the idea, ¡§adopt; don¡¦t purchase.¡¨ Even if they are stray animals, they will love you after you take good care of them. If you can¡¦t adopt them, be a volunteer to help care for them.

Article: What Foreigners Think about The Problems of the Stray Dogs in Taiwan
|
I AM FOR IT!
The words from Li-Lun:
Think about the importance of freedom. Whether you adopt or you adopt and I keep, the animals are locked! What we do as ¡§One-Day Volunteers¡¨ is to walk the dog. The joy the dog exposes when it is released from the cage stops me from locking it in the cage. It is better to neuter the dog and find a proper site to let it live free.
The words from Chun-Wei:
There is a lot of space in Changhua to try the activity TNR if the government can spend the money which is used to catch and kill stray animals and to build a shelter on the activity TNR. We can choose a distant site to avoid bothering the daily life of the citizens. To keep the furkids from breeding, they surely need to get neutered. What foreigners did successfully on the Net sets a good example for us. We can give it a try!
