Students: Hello, Miss Lee.
Miss Lee: Hello everyone. I’m Li Xiao-Wen from Bamboo Curtain Studio. It’s our pleasure to welcome all of you to join us to enjoy rice ball and knowing Plum Tree Creek in Bamboo Curtain Studio today.
Student:Excuse me, Miss Lee, could we recording during the interview? Miss Lee: Sure. Ok, now, what questions have you prepared to ask?
Student:Miss Lee, What is your career and job content? Miss Lee: Bamboo curtain studio is an artist's settlement, there are a lot of artists work here. My job is to help these artists. For example, this is the artist's work, when he was working, we assisted him to complete.
Student:How many years have you been working for the issue of Plum Tree Creek? Miss Lee: I’ve join Environmental Art Movement at Plum Tree Creek since 2001.So it has been already three years. Student:In these years, what’s your opinion about the study of Plum Tree Creek? Miss Lee: It’s a very beautiful river. Have you been up to the headstream?
Students: Yes.
Miss Lee: So you must saw the water there was very clear, right? And there’s also crabs, fishes and shrimp. But have you been to downstream? When walking along the trail to MRT Zhuwei Station, it is the same river but becoming so dirty and smelly. We felt pity, how come a beautiful river with clean upstream becoming so dirty. We though it would be nice to make the river clean again so the people in Zhuwei could get close to it once more and have a better life. This is how I feel about Plum Tree Creek.
Student:So the Plum Tree Creek has been polluted since when?
Miss Lee: Well, it’s a problem existed long time ago and it is relative to the development of Zhuwei. Long time ago, most of the lands here were farmland so the nature could be conserved. Later on, came the factories which emissions sewage and exhaust gas. And them the new buildings were built, lots of families throw their garbage into Plum Tree Creek and caused more and more pollution. Though the pollution is slowly increased, the river has already has a big difference than before.Student:Miss Lee what is the main reason of containment in the origin of the river?
Miss Lee: Origin of the river? It is up in the hill so I don’t think it’s polluted seriously. But when it pass the golf club, which has a huge lawn to conserve, the river would be polluted by the chemical. Also there are some hoggery over there and the feces of pigs, plus what we just said, household wastewater, are discharged directly to Plum Tree Creek, and causing water pollution. Student:So what is the main source of the pollution?
Miss Lee: In this area's main pollution is agricultural wastewater, including animal husbandry, agriculture, chemical agent used in the golf club; and the domestic waste water. Few industrial factories are here nowadays so industrial waste water pollution is less.Student:If the Plum Tree Creek continue to be polluted, what’s the impact on our life?
Miss Lee: It’s a good question. If the Plum Tree Creek continue to be polluted, what’s the impact on our life? In fact, most of the residents doesn’t even know the existence of Plum Tree Creek. Many peoplke thought it’s just a smelly ditch. Maybe the existence of Plum Tree Creek may not seem relative to our daily life. But if it could be clear as it was again, we can offer the residents in Zhuwei a better and more comfortable living space. That’s why we are working so hard to make the Plum Tree Creek clear. Student: Which area of Plum Tree Creek is rich in ecologic? Miss Lee: I think it is different between each area. Upstream has a rich ecologic because it is closer to nature and less vandalism. Downstream is also a special place. Locating at the junction of estuary and Damsui River , it belongs to wetland ecologic. Many special birds and species can be found there so it has a big difference from the upstream. And for the midstream, we haven’t found much species there. But an insect expert says that he has found 99 different butterflies there. He felt that if we take a positive future ecological restoration of Plum Tree Creek, the ecologic of midstream will getting better and better. Student:Miss Lee, if the Plum Tree Creek become dirtier and dirtier, will Damsui River also become dirty?
Miss Lee: Yes. Think about it. If every brook is dirty then Damsui River will certainly be dirty, too. Because Plum Tree Creek is just one of the tributary that flows into Damsui River , there are still lots of other brooks. If all of them become dirty, will Damsui River be clean? Of course not. Conversely, if a small tributary is clean, when they flow into Tamsui River it will be clean. That is why we have been trying to makePlum Tree Creek clear. Student:Which area of Plum Tree Creek is the most beautiful?
Miss Lee: I personally think upstream is the most beautiful. It’s upstream and origins are both very clear and pretty. You can hear the floats of the water and it’s the sound of nature. If you have chance to record the sound of downstream, midstream and upstream, you’ll find out the sound from upstream is the most beautiful. Because it is clean and you can also hear birds and insects occasionally. Students:Thank you for being interviewed.

Reflection
We’ve learned that Plum Tree Creek used to be a very beautiful and clean river. The built of factories, hoggery and new building caused more and more serious pollution. Lots of people see Plum Tree Creek as a ditch with less awareness. However, there’ s a group of people they love Plum Tree Creek a lot. Bamboo Curtain Studio found an environmental group to make Plum Tree Creek a better place. We admire the group so much because it require lot of time, effort and money to protect Plum Tree Creek and this group of people are willing to put all of them in it to make it better. So we should help and work together to make it a clean and beautiful river. Maybe Plum Tree Creek will turn out to be one of Taiwan ’s tourist attractions!
