Interview with Zhwang Lian Peng
By Huang Wei-ru
Today, we had an interview with another terrific calligrapher, Zhwang Lian Peng.
When I saw Mr. Zhwang, I felt surprised at his white-haired. It seemed that he was not so old that I image.
In the process of interview, I thought he was a humorous person according to his discourse. For example, I asked him “What is the difficulty or the impressive thing in your calligraphy career?” “Before I got married, my wife thought I am full of temperament; however, she regretted quickly since I was always immersed in calligraphy practice!” he answered. We all laughed with his interesting answer. In addition, I ask him “What are the requirements being a member of Masters of Sulphur Creek?” “As long as you can write calligraphy and be creative, you are able to join us.” said Zhwang.
I was so glad that I had a chance to interview this master.

It’s our pleasure to interview one of the Masters of Sulphur Creek members, Zhwang Lian Peng. After brief introduction by principle Huang, we started our interview. “When I entered Tainan Teachers Training School, I felt unsatisfied with any clubs. One day, I saw my seniors practicing calligraphy, which arouse my interest in calligraphy art. After graduation, I apprenticed with my master, Jiang-Yu- Min in Taipei. From then on, calligraphy has become an important part in my life.” Zhwang said. Under Jiang’s guidance, Zhwang got the first place in 1980’s. He said “Nowadays, calligraphy is ignored by the young, so I hope you guys can spend time practicing calligraphy.” And I couldn’t agree it any more. Besides, he told us that there are two definitions of ugly: one is you try your best to write; the other is you didn’t put much attention to practice.
In Zhwang’s opinion, if a wonderful piece can be understood by starters, it is to be strengthened; however, if it can’t be understood by starters, it’s worthy of praise. Sometimes, I thought that calligraphy is not only an art but the attitude toward life.
At the end of the interview, he exhorted us “The secret of success is constancy of purpose”. And I hope we have a chance to meet in the future.

We were going to interview a calligraphy master, Zhwang Lian Peng. At the beginning, Zhwang shared his ups and downs in the process of calligraphy career. He said that his calligraphy career is enlightened by Jiang-Yu- Min, who said that Zhwang was good at seal script (a style of calligraphy art). However, Zhwang preferred cursive script which is easier to show his attitude toward calligraphy.
Zhwang said that he was glad to join the calligraphic club Masters of Sulphur Creek because he can deliver his ideas to the congenial persons. For example, he held a calligraphic exhibition called Autumnal Ink Painting, which made the audience experience different calligraphy art. Besides, Zhwang told us an impressive thing that he had gotten a call from his fans who appreciated his works. He was touched by his fans’ support and he had more confidence on his calligraphy career.
