Handbooks and signatures for us
Each of us got the handbooks of "Guardian angels training for dementia elders" prepared by the Foundation. We all signed in to be guardian angels of elders with dementia.
Director Liu's introduction of Ms. Chan
"Ms. Chan and the Foundation make their efforts to serve the elders. The spirit is worthy of respect. After the lecture, I hope we all learn how to take care of the elders around us." said Mr. Liu.
The situation comedy by the Foundation about dementia
Ms. Chan started with a situation comedy of dementia. It not only interested us but also let us know the symptoms of dementia. For example, a dementia elder would forget where he/she is and what he/she is good at. Another example of dementia elder is a change in temper.
One dementia per 7 seconds in the world
Ms. Chan said "One dementia is found every 7 seconds in the world. "It is hard to believe and reminds us that our relatives or friends could be with dementia.
Signs of early dementia
Symptoms of dementia include a weaker memory affecting daily lives, inability of doing familiar works, difficulty of oral expression, loss the concept of time and place, and so on. If these symptoms last more than 6 months, it may be dementia. Persons with the symptoms should have medical advices from the neurology department. It is important to be treated in the early stages.
The method of away from Dementia
High blood pressure, high blood sugar, high blood cholesterol, over weight, head trauma, smoking, depression are factors of causing dementia. Prevention is better than cure. The main method to prevent dementia is to live an active life, both mentally and physically.
Take care of dementia elders
Ms. Chan said that dementia elders are suspicious and disquieted. They might lose parts of memories, experiences and abilities gained. But we should not focus on what they lose. Instead, we should try to keep their habits and abilities of living.
Providing social welfare resources for dementia
There are many social resources for people with dementia now. Such as groups supporting of dementia patients’ family, fingerprint files of dementia patients, and attending to School of Wisdom. Family members of dementia patients can take advantage of the resources for assistance.
Building a community for dementia patients
This lecture in Ping He Elementary School nurtured the first bunch of guardian angels. Now, we, The Ping-He Doves, are members of guardian angels. Helping people made us feel honorable. We promised that we would do our best to take care of dementia patients.
Games and prizes
After the lecture, Ms. Chan asked us few questions about dementia. We all raised our hands up to attract her attention. Each of us hoped that he/she would be the lucky one to answer questions.
Gift exchange with Ms. Chan
Ms. Chan gave us the bracelets and brooches for guardian angels. She expected us to be a new power in the community. We also prepared a letter of thanks and a DVD of situation comedy about hair donation as gifts for her.
