It was the only path from Mt. BaiGuo in YuanLin to the school, which was so rough that even a crowd of bull carts
had to pass through this wriggly and steep lane and pick up the bride. However,
this lane has been planned to be a land rover lane. Down to this lane, there is
a resting place for the bikes, especially planned by the Bicycles Association.
Go more further and the mountain wall is accompanied by an ordinary short
cement wall, which was the original boundary between FenYuan and YuanLin.

with unburned firewood piled up under the eaves. Inside the building lies an
old cooking stove that seems still being used right now and there is also a
small piece of land applied to cultivate vegetables. It really reappears the
early life of rural village. At the place where they offer sacrifices to Gods
or ancestors, a tablet written with “高陽堂” is still hung at the outside top of the middle hall in most of
this kind of buildings.

It is quite ingenious of design and
decorations around the commander’s platform. It was designed just on the sports
day once held and received the fund. The designer arranged the space so well
and represented it amazingly. Most of all, bamboos are knit at random and
shaped into many “大”, reportedly also shaped into a word as a whole but hard
identified. This idea is from the name of “DaiChu” Village. (“Dai” stands for
big and “Chu” stands for bamboos.) The most
admiring is that in the process of knitting the bamboos were shaped without a
draw and any articulation but with tight tabling between bamboos. The designer
is Mr. Tzen, the cultural art worker in Taichung County.
Besides the knit bamboos, the mosaic picture made by parents and students is
also greatly featured that it is illustrated by the views of the campus, e.g.
trees, the school gate and each part of the campus. Everyone painted on the
small tiles and then collaged these tiles into a completely gorgeous picture so
that the beauty of the campus is most perfectly performed.

At the small path near by the ancient

she is the owner of the grocery store and sells snacks to students. She sold
kinds of candies and toys in the past but few now. This grocery store has
existed for more than fifty years. She came from prosperous YuanLin and got
married here when teenage. She had to carry water on her own, living without
electricity, but she liked the cool weather here. Once a day a student
discovered the unique mailbox in the house. The colorful mailbox with local
specialties, such as the litchi and pineapple, on the half-protruding
appearance attracted everyone. There is still a white pigeon with a cute letter
in its mouth resting on the top of the box. This pretty design could be seen on
all the mailbox in the village because they were provided by the town mayor.

The ancient water-carrying path, opened up
by the local residents, was meant to solve the problem of drinking water. In
the early time, it was inconvenient in traffic and lack of water so that the
residents had to settle this problem of living demand. Not until they found a
natural trench and dug two wells at the source, could this severe problem be
released. Afterwards, due to the steep the path was laid by stones and formed
into a long stairway, reportedly with 305 footsteps. However it becomes a place
to throw trash nowadays. Because the path locates in the mount, there are lots
of views of natural living beings, e.g. Chinese Pennisetum, Balloon Vine and
Shell Flower, and of fruit trees and farms, e.g. pineapple, longan, green
mango, carambola and ginger farms.

WunDe Elementary School was
originally part of TongAn Branch and, due to the increased number of students
and practice of 9-year integrated curriculum, then turned formally into Changhua County FenYuan Township WunDe Elementary School on
August 1st, 1969. For your information, the wall was built in 1988.
The number of students is, however, not great enough, probably leading to be
absorbed. The origin of the school’s name is special. Its name should be
“DaiChu elementary school” due to its location in DaiChu Township .
However there is a school named
“DaiChu elementary school” already. As a result, it is given another name
“WunDe elementary school”. This name is also meaningful in Mandarin
(Taiwanese). “De” sounds like bamboo in Mandarin (Taiwanese) and stands for
plenty bamboo there, too. Even the two hands holding the word “De” represent
the name in Mandarin (Taiwanese), i.e. “hold (De) safely”.

are locally planted and not improved. What’s more, those are Tainung No.2 and

those pineapples’ growth will be hastened by slake lime, that is Ca(OH)2.
Many manufactories of rice-flour noodles in Hsinchu and Puli are from FenYuan.
Those manufactured in Puli are made from more flour (corn flour) and those in

residents, from ShihGuei in Nan’an County at FuJian Province, brought Chung Fu Wang Ye
Deity respectfully to Taiwan ,
landed by Lukang during exploration in Taiwan under Chien-lung years in
Ching Dynasty and finally moved to Fenyuan. At that time, they saw a huge
camphor tree with empty inside, allowing people to hide in, and therefore
placed the Deity sincerely in the camphor tree for the residents to worship.
Accordingly, this place got the name “Camphor Hollow”. As time goes by, the
village was getting larger, residing in “Camphor Hollow”, Dongliao, Chu-Kao-Tso
and Da-Jhu-Wei, and set up a ritual organization that leaders took turns to
serve the Deity. In the early time this temple was the place where the three
villages, such as bamboo-wall-encircled Da-Jhu-Wei, olive-featured Gan-Zai-Jiao
and banyan-featured Rong-Zai-Jiao, paid their respects to their Gods together

On the way, the village leader introduced

village were the same, colored like pale wood and decorated with fruits, such
as pineapple and grapes. The village leader said that these mailboxes were
delivered from the mainland and the fruits were those produced in DaiChu
village. Afterwards he brought us to a small temple of God of Earth and Mountain, the only one in DaiChu village. This temple served no
Goddess of Earth but Mountain only God of Earth and Mountain. By the side of
the temple stood a hundred-year-old banyan of which thick roots were twisted
and intricate in the earth and leaves were fully greeny and glossy, looking
respectable and affable. The God of Earth and Mountain was originally treated
and served upon the roots and later moved to the temple since the temple had

This temple of Bao Ching Tien has existed for more than ten years. The ancestors of the residents here, whose
surnames were Hsu, had been asked in their dream by Elder Bao to build a temple
for him and he would bless and protect them. This temple is the new one and the
statute of Elder Bao originally located in the hall in the middle of a
three-section compound building not far from the present temple. Reasonably,
the residents have been worshipping Elder Bao for more than a hundred years.
More than ten years ago, the residents thought the original place for Elder Bao
was too small and hence built a new temple, the present one. Consequently the
original place treats and serves their ancestors only instead of Elder Bao.
They address Elder Bao as Bao Saint. In the middle of the main hall sits the
statue of Bao Ching Tien, of which the right side is God of Fu De (God of Earth

Three
specialties of Fenyuan Township: rice-flour
noodles, litchi and pineapple. The area of the farm of pineapple, one of the
specialties, is the largest in the county that it occupies more than 440
hectares.
How to select pineapples
Pineapples are produced in all four seasons
in Taiwan and categorized according to different seasons which affect their quality. Pineapples
in spring and summer, from the last third part of April to June, are in the
same type, of which are the sweetest ones, good to take uncookedly. Pineapples
in winter, from November to February next year, are too sour to take uncookedly
and, therefore, turn to be processed food. Visually, we pick out the pineapple
with compact heavy flesh and clean splendid appearance, without split and
injury. What’s more, its fruit core should be protruding apparently, its flesh
should smell fresh, strong and special, and the fillip sound should heavy and
substantial. Inside the fruit, there should be dark yellow and juicy flesh with
high sweet and low sour degree, tasting fragrant and delicious with high
quality. In front of the pineapple farm in Fenyuan Township,
usually planted a long cane, the one used by God of Earth and Mountain,
standing for the guardian of this place.

Faith in Fenyuan Township
This township is developed later than
others and has few passageways to large cities. Thereafter there are no temples
built by all the past dynasties but by the villages. The difference between
worship of residents and of government is localism and variety. Most worship of
residents is out of their own motivation so that what they need or prefer is
easy to found through whom or what they worship. There are more than 200 Gods
in Taiwan and most of them are Gods of Township Guardian that came from homelands of
residents’ ancestors. Fu De Ci are in every villages in this township, though
small-scaled, because the residents are engaged in agriculture and grateful to
this land, making much of worshipping God of Earth and Mountain.
Nanhua Temple is the
only temple that worships Saintly Emperor Guan in this township. Nanhua Temple locates in DaiChu Village . “Nan” stands for
Nantou, “Hua” for Changhua, and the location of Nanhua Temple is exactly at the middle of Nantou and Changhua. Its address is No.80 Lane 222
Sec.1 Rd. Daichang Daichu Village in Fenyuan Township and it was built
in August, 2068. It serves Saintly Emperor Guan, Padmapani Avalokiteshvara, and
Cheng Huang Ye.
Most of the residents here have the same
surname “Hsu” and the homeland of their ancestors is ZhangZhou in FuJian Province .
Their ancestors came over here, named “崙仔尾” (which meant the top of the mount), under Emperor Xian Feng’s
reign in Ching Dynasty. At that time only 9 households lived here but now more
than a hundred do. The village planned to build temples since 1945 but were

2008-1-3Beautified and green Landscape of the Activities Center in TaChu Village,
FenYuang Township,
ChangHua County(Wei-cheng)
|
Contents:
|
一.Inspiration
1. Refreshing the top of the Mt. Bagua:Mt. Bagua is enriched by abundant landscape of human culture, history and
nature. TaChu Village is precisely on the top of the Mt. Bagua and the important place
of production of pineapple. As the necessary access to Mt.Bagua,
this community, however, contains no place for the residents of the community
to take a rest without any thought of leaving. As long as a place would be
appropriately divided for the residents to enjoy through the chance “city and
countryside landscape reconstruction”, not only the dream of the whole
community will come true but also the local industry can be promoted.
2. Making the best use of the Communal Activities Center:Except some meetings, few residents act in
the Activities Center, though built for the residents
in the community, due to its framework and the surroundings. There are plenty
of high and low buildings around the ActivitiesCenter and that makes the
center isolated. As long as it is appropriate planned and reshaped to a Communal Resting Place,
it will definitely attract the residents and make the best use of itself.
People in the community are all looking forward to the changing Activities Center if properly reconstructed.
3. Opening up the school and making thecenter reachableThe Communal Activities Center , though in the
school, is next the school gate and the main road. If the wall between the
center and the outside can be demolished, the Communal Activities Center can be more
reachable to the residents and the community and the school can be integrated
as a whole. Therefore this opening space brings accessibility and amenity to
the community.
二.Goals
1. Demolish the existing obstacles andbuilt a friendly community.
2. Reinforce greening the Activities Center and reshape the community
3. Green the Communal Resting Park and make the best
use of it
4. Open up the school and develop theunknown space in the community
5. Add night lighting equipment and createa night pearl on the top of Mt. BuGua
三. Expectations and efficiency
1. Solving the problem of inconvenientpassage to the Communal Activities Center
2. Increasing the efficiency of the Communal Activities Center
3. Bringing the various kinds ofopportunities and space for the residents
4. Providing a new park for the residentsto take a rest and enjoy leisure
5. Assembling conscious and emotions of theresident in the community
6. Promoting identification within theresidents in the community
7. Beautifying the community and pushingthe development of industry in the community
8. Creating a night pearl that lightens the
shape of Mt. BaGua
四. Strategies to permanent management and
preservation
(一)Set up a specialized manager
1.Preservation: Ms. ShuYuan Huang, one of the Parental Committee
2.Surroundings: Students in the elementary school
3.Green environment: The Communal Development Association takes charge of
renovating the plants to keep the plants healthily grown from the expense if
needed and Ms. RueiTsau Shiu takes charge of preservation.
(二)Publicize the residents to cherish the
resource of the school and combine with the teaching topics for the residents
to learn together.
(三)Promote the Family Volunteer Adoption
System, establish the Family Adoption Plan and improve the relationship among the
families through adoption
(四)Apply to the Township Office for relevant
expense to preserve the resources of the community

一. Background:
Since this
school lies on the top of Mt. BaGua , it is surrounded
by plenty of natural landscapes and ecology. The teachers and students in this
school and all the parents in the community therefore have been expecting a
campus close to life with vitality and creativity. Even passer-by at Mt. BaGua could take a rest in this wonderful place and experience the works of God.
二.Goal:
1. Inspire each child to think creatively
and know their specialty through the originality activities with multiple
orientations and variety, so that they are able to think independently and have
the chance to succeed.
2. Discuss and practice the public issues
by the way that teachers, students and parents in the community join together.
More users attend to this discussion and more ideas are gathered in the process
that they shape the public spaces together. Hence such basic elements of
democratic society as “Discussion” and “Attendance” will finally become part of
life styles in the campus.
3. Create a place that can provide chances
for students to learn and let residents, teachers and students develop
permanently.
三.Plan:
1. Invite all the teachers, students and
residents in the community to attend to symposiums, conferences and
orientations or to fill out questionnaires for various opinions about each
needed changes in the campus.
2. Hold school’s core curriculum
conferences for multi-oriented ideas about vitality environment and creative
campus form the teachers and reach a common view through cooperation, carrying
out the concepts and practice of permanent development of creative education.
3. Hold all kinds of creative educational
art contests, e.g. space planning, naming and painting, and encourage all the
teachers and students to think creatively and to bring out their originality.
4. Invite experts and great architects in
related fields to provide their design ideas and build the campus creative
space together with all the teachers, students in the school and the
representatives of parents.
5. After the reconstruction engineering,
continue to plan, improve and integrate the featured curriculum of the campus,
