Wushantou Reservoir Spillway
▌Semi Hydraulic Fill Construction
During the Wushantou Reservoir design stage, Hachitayoichi adopted the latest “Semi Hydraulic Fill” technique in which concrete piles were first nailed into the center of the reservoir. They were then covered in copper plates. After that, clay layer, sand, gravel, cobble in small, medium, and large sizes were laid from the inside to the outside, and were used to construct an embankment. The clay layer in the middle is the most crucial part of these sandstones. If the clay were not fine in texture, there would be exudation. After Hachitayoichi discovered the fine clay in Danei Village nearby Wushantou; he decided right there and then to adopt “Semi Hydraulic Fill “to construct the Wushantou Reservoir.
Since this technique was state-of-the-art technology at the time, it had not been used in Japan before, and that Hachitayoichi was a young man. When he proposed “Semi Hydraulic Fill”, officers at The Office of the Taiwan Governor General queried its feasibility. In 1922, The Office of the Taiwan Governor General sent expert Dr. Sanohujijirou, an expert in reservoir studies to construct an investigation at Wutoushan. After the investigation, he responded positively to this new technique, which greatly lessened pressure on the part of The Office of the Taiwan Governor General. Later, to handle the matter with care, Hachitayoichi visited an undergoing reservoir engineering while he was in the U.S.A. to some machines. After careful observations were made, Hachitayoichi realized that the quality of the clay in Danei Township was finer than the one used in Semi Hydraulic Fill reservoirs in the U.S.A. This made Hachitayoichi more confident about this material.

▌Coral-like Reservoir
Wushantou Reservoir is located in the low-land water collection area of Tainan County Dongshan, Guanjia, and Danei. Since the mountain valleys are tortuous, after water catchment, the reservoir lakeshore appears winding. Looking down from above, it appears coral-like, thus, it is also known as the “Coral-like Lake.
