▌Location of Chia-Nan Plain

The Taiwan Island is situated between the East Asia Plate and the Philippine Plate. It is long south north, and wide east west. In the middle of the island, there are several mountain ranges in the south north direction where the plain and terrace are distributed. Chia-Nan Plain, the largest plain on the Taiwan Island, is located southwest of Taiwan.

The scope of Chia-Nan Plain boundary is not clearly defined. It varies depending on research needs. Generally speaking, the scope for the east west boundary is determined by land form, thus, this scope is less subject to change. Some believe that it starts at the Ali Mountains in the East and ends at Hai Bin. The scope for the south north boundary also varies. Some believe that it starts at Beigang River in the north and ends at Fengshan in the South stretching 145km from south to north. Some also believe that it starts at Huwei River in the north and ends at Kaohsiung Bay in the South stretching 130km from south to north. The boundary least in size starts at Jhuoshuei River in the north, and ends at Erren River in the south stretching 110km from south to north. It is also the first irrigation area of Chia-Nan Canal.

▌District

In view of the first irrigation area of the Chia-Nan Canal, the districts of Chia-Nan Plain cover: Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Chiayi City, Tainan County, and Tainan City. They are collectively called “Tainan Zhou” during the Japanese Colonial Period. The developments in many regions can be traced back to the Ming Cheng Period or even earlier. (About 400 years ago)
