▌Wushantou Hydropower Plant Construction by Differential Water Transport

The initial irrigation water source provided by Wushantou Reservoir was for agricultural use, but it also has to supply water for daily and industrial use in Tainan area. Later on, it was open for public use to promote tourism. With more versatile functions, by October, 2000 following the government’s energy policy, Chia-Nan Irrigation Association and Formosa Chemicals Fibre Corporation co-invested in “Chia-Nan Industrial Co., Ltd. NT$360,000,000 was spent on constructing Wushantou Reservoir Hydro Power Plant at the new water outlet of Wushantou Reservoir.

Being the first privately owned hydro power plant in Taiwan, it generates electricity through the 20-meter difference in distance between the reservoir water outlet and the outlet pipe. In October 2002, the power plant was completed and began generating electricity. The annual power generation is about 42,000,000 kilowatts. All the power generated was sold to Taiwan Power Company at NT$1.4 per kilowatt. Wushantou Reservoir not only provides water for agricultural, industrial and daily use, serves as a place for tourism and recreation, it also generates power.

▌New Sikou Hydro Power Construction by Differential Water Transport

Since Wushantou Reservoir was a profit-making facility for Irrigation Association, in 2004, Chia-Nan Irrigation Association built another power plant at Sikou, Wushantou Reservoir. The 20-meter difference in distance before water from Zenwun River enters Wushantou Reservoir is utilized to generate electricity. This plant was officially inaugurated in July, 2007.

▌3 Power Generations with the Same Water Source

Water from Zenwun Reservoir first passes through a power plant before flowing into Wushanling Tunnel. Then, it passes through Sikou Hydro Power Plant before flowing into Wushantou Reservoir. After water is drained, it passes through Wushantou Hydro power Plant again. This way, electricity is generated 3 times. It is considered a highly effective way to utilize the water.
