Wushantou Reservoir
▌Tourism based development
After the Second World War, the government listed the reservoir as an important water source after the martial law was declared. People were seldom permitted to enter. By the 1950s, and the 1960s, the reservoir was open for public access as the tension for war lessened, and tourism became popular. In 1958, Taiwan Province Security Command agreed to lift the ban and open it to public use except for regions that are listed as monitor areas.
In 1969, Chia-Nan Irrigation Association established Wushantou Scenic Area, Irrigation Association, and setup a tourism office at the Wushantou Scenic Area Administration to promote tourism in the reservoir area. This setup was intended to raise funds for the repair and maintenance of hydraulic facilities. Later, the Taiwan Provincial Government also listed Wushantou Reservoir as a county scenic area under Tainan County official jurisdiction.
In 1978, Irrigation Association established “Wushantou Scenic Area Administration” (renamed “Shanhu Pond Scenic Area Administration in 1987). It is setup to take charge of tourism based business of the reservoir. In February the following year, Wushantou Scenic Area was promoted into a special provincial scenic area. Chia-Nan Irrigation Association also actively planned the various recreational facilities inside the scenic area including the temple of heaven (tian-tan), the suspension bridge, the water affinity park, the Champs Elysees Ave , and the statue of Hachitayoichi. Lately, the Hachitayoichi Memorial Hall opened for tourists to enjoy a trip to nature, humanity, and culture.
