Fetching Water from Zenwun River to Open a Tunnel

Wushantou Reservoir is constructed at the river valley of Guantian River. However, the water of Guantian River is less than adequate. In order to solve this problem, Hachitayoichi came up with the idea of borrowing water from the neighboring Zenwun River. It is not an easy thing to pilot water as Wushanling stands in between Guantian River, and Zenwun River. Hachitayoichi therefore opened up a water inlet at the river mouth of Zenwun River. He then opened a tunnel at Wushanling to allow water from Zenwun River to flow into the tunnel, and enter Wushantou Reservoir. The water inadequacy problem was finally solved.

The Most Difficult Engineering

The thought of opening a tunnel in the mountains makes one think it is not an easy thing to do. Wushanling tunnel is over 3km long. With the open canal, the conduit, the water gate engineering added, it measures 4km long. The engineering began in February, 1922. On December 6th, the natural gas explosion caused more than 50 casualties. Later, the engineering design was repeatedly changed. Finally, the most dangerous part of the tunnel was opened. It was completed on November, 1929 after 7 years. It is considered the most difficult engineering out of all the Chia-Nan Canal Engineering works.

Man-made Landscape- Sikou Shukeng and SikouHydro Power Plant Construction

The Wushanling Tunnel has two openings. Zenwun River Water inlet is located in the east (AKA: Dong Kou). The water inlet at the Wushantou Reservoir side is called Sikou. Before the water enters Sikou, it aggregates at the weir. Underneath it is a vertical pit called Sikou Shukeng. The water first flows into Sikou from Shukeng before entering the reservoir. It is interesting to see a large hole on the water surface, and that it has beautiful landscapes. Thus, it is also a popular tourist spot. Some believe the view is as beautiful as that of Switzerland. Therefore, Sikou is also known as “Little Switzerland”.

In March, 2004, “The Chia-Nan Industries Co., Ltd. Constructed Sikou Hydro Plant. Water from Zenwun River transported to No. 1 Sikou Weir (before entering Wushantou Reservoir) generates electricity again. In March, 2007, it was completed and all the electricity generated was sold to Taiwan Power Company.
