The Profile of Tilapia
(Wuguo Fish)
Tilapia belongs to the Family Cichlidae and is a kind of tropical fish native to Africa. There are more than one hundred species of tilapia in the world. The color of tilapia body is slightly different among different species. The general color is black and gray, and tilapia also can slightly change its color according to the environment as a protection function. The female tilapia can carry the eggs in her mouth instead of placing them in a nest. When hatching her eggs, the female tilapia stops eating and growing. So, the female tilapia is smaller than the male one, given the same living environment. The economic value of female tilapia is lower than that of male fish. Tilapia has good adaptability to environmental variations except the cold weather. So, tilapia is also among the easiest and profitable fish to breed. This is due to its omnivorous diet, strong resistance to illness, rapid growth, and good meat quality.
