Her older son Yu-chi suffers the “Attention Deficit Disorder” and the younger one Yung-chi suffers “Asperger disease”. The symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are lack of attention, of too many activities and impulsiveness. Asperger disease is characterized by poor social interactivity, communication problem and flexibility in thinking. The disease will impede social interactivity and career development as well major damages to other area. There is so far on cure for Asperger disease, which can only be reminded and accepted in life. Therefore, such characteristics of the disease can not easily be comprehended by teachers, inviting a lot of misunderstandings and unfair corporal punishment during study. With mom’s good-natured communications, teachers asked to join the parents to learn psychological medical courses in Chung Gung Hospital in order to fully understand what in the child’s mind, his needs and proper educational method. And the assistance and help given by teachers are one of the driving forces to help mom go on.

Yu-ling overcame disadvantages of lack of attention and kept Yu-chi beyond the basic level in academic performance. And he successfully passed the GEPT English test and got the scholarship for studying in Kaohsiung High School of Commerce. To train the children to be confident, the children were encouraged to recite English textbook in the regular school morning meeting. Yu-chi’s self-confidence affected his teachers and encouraged his peers to follow suit. Yu-ling wished to make people around understand better the rare diseases and learnt lots of different living experiences from it.

Recognized by Chang Geng Memorial Hospital children intelligence doctors and psychologists as well as recommendation of Autism Association of Taiwan Asperger Disease Parents’ Association”, they set up a division in South Taiwan, bring parents of children suffering Asperger disease to exchange and develop resources. Hence, the parents can support each other and get courage with more families walking out of the despair. People from more and more levels of society can be expected to learn more about “Asperger Disease” or “Attention Deficit Disorder” and the impacts family and society.TOP

★Education and Medical Treatment

In 1944,Vienna pediatrician Asperger proposed four cases of boys suffering social interactivity problems. Asperger disease was first to be recognized widely.

Asperger disorder patients have abnormal No.2, No. 17, and No. 19 pairs of chromosomes leading to slight disorder in nervous system. The patients are usually self-centered and hard to understand others’ feelings and emotions. They are irritable, anxious and comparatively they are more focused, frank, true to self, persistent and specially talented.

According to studies, there are about 3.6~3.7 Asperger disorder patients in every 1000 7 to 16 year-old children. The disorder can be stabilized if following strict medical instructions. Yu-ling Hsu from southern parents’ association of Asperger disorder said that British literary master Orwell, musical genius Mozart and western philosophy master Kant were all suffering from Asperger disorder.

Her son studies in normal class and requires special help from assistant teachers thanks to his emotional problems. Or consultants for emotional problems may come to help these children.

Yu-ling Hsu has deep love and feeling toward her child and is eager to share with other parents of Asperger disorder patients. She expects that Asperger disorder can be more differentiated in health education and the suffering children can get more concerted help from the government, school, teachers and parents.TOP
