Taipei City
Pedestrian arcades are everywhere in Taiwan, and most of them are uneven and damaged, which has become a big problem. Most cities could not solve the complicated problem. However, Taipei city, the capital of Taiwan set a good example to other cities by leveling all the pedestrian arcades in the beginning of the 21th century.
Taipei City started to promote the “Arcade leveling project” in 2001. The total length of the arcades in Taipei City is 170,000 meters. From 2002 to 2009, Mayor Ma and Mayor totally improved 110,000 meters of arcades, which makes Taipei an international city with barrier-free pedestrian arcades.
New Taipei City
The city promotes the leveling of arcades for urban roads, business districts, stations, surrounding areas of important buildings and main roads above 30 meters. With the goal of "Friendly city", New Taipei City has leveled 8,587.29 meters of pedestrian arcades.
Taoyuan City
The arcade leveling project in Taoyuan City uses an innovative construction method, which takes only 3 days to shorten the construction impact on the business of stores and the public. Taoyuan City has completed the improvement of 8 administrative districts, a total of 45 road sections, with a total length of more than 6 kilometers.
Taichung City
The Urban Development Bureau of Taichung City Government achieved consensus on implementation through public communication and participation mechanisms, and steadily promoted the arcade leveling plan. In 2020, Taichung City received a subsidy of 18.46 million NT$ from the Ministry of the Interior, ranking first in Taiwan for four consecutive years. With the funding, Taichung City improved 15 road sections , with 18,000 meters of pedestrian arcades.
Tainan City
The Public Works Bureau of Tainan City stated that since 108, the main axis of the Cultural Corridor of Tainan City has been leveled. A total of 6 road sections have been completed, with a total length of 2.3 kilometers.
The Tainan City Government actively promotes the "Friendly Arcade Unblocking Project" to eliminate the illegal occupation of arcades, and calls on residents to voluntarily leave a space of at least 1.5 meters wide in the arcades for pedestrians to pass through.
Kaohsiung City
Kaohsiung City is cooperating with the Urban Construction Department's plan to implement smooth arcades in the business district near the train station from 2018 to 2020, making the overall traffic environment more friendly and achieving the goal of a livable city.
In 2021, the plan is to subsidize 8 million NT$, with the length of the arcade leveled 1,500 meters.
