What is an arcade?
Taiwan receives a great amount of rainfall throughout the year, especially in the rainy season, when pedestrians usually get wet if there are no shelters over their heads. Noticing the situation, some house owners yield the front part of their house to the people passing by, so they would not get soaked any longer. Over time, more and more houses took the same measures and eventually Taiwan's special arcade culture came into being.
Sad to say, as old houses were rebuilt in different times, they began to have floors with different heights, which makes it very hard for people to walk on, especially for those who are blind, handicapped or elderly. And it turned out that a friendly local custom became a trap making people get injured frequently.
