My Volunteer Experience
Cheng Yu: Volunteer in Taipei Astronomical Museum
I worked as a volunteer in Taipei Astronomical Museum in 2020 summer. My job was to show visitors how to launch an air rocket. The biggest challenge I had was how to explain the procedure to foreign visitors in English. Eventually, I overcame the obstacle by using simple short English sentences with help of my body language. Even though being a volunteer was very tiring, I still got a great sense of achievement from helping people. In the future, I would like to be a docent, giving tours in the field of astronomy. To do my job better next time, I think I will have to strengthen my expression ability both in Chinese and English.

Pin Yi: Volunteer at a recycling drop-off station
I worked as a volunteer at a recycling drop-off station when I was in the 5th grade. The most difficult part of this job was to deal with the bad smell at the station. As you know, people don¡¦t always thoroughly wash bottles or cans before they do the recycle. So, the liquid from those bottles or cans went sour under the heat of summer. At the beginning, I found it unbearable, but later on, putting on a mask did help me feel less sick. I notice that most of the people working at the recycling stations are elderly people. Working long hours under that environment is quite hard for the elderly and their pays are very low. I feel happy when I work at the station with them because I can ease their workload and help the Earth at the same time. In the future, I plan to help children overseas. In order to be well-prepared for the future volunteer work, I think I will have to save some money and improve my English. Also, it will be much better if I can find a like-minded partner going on the trip with me.

Hsiao Hsuan: Volunteer at churches
I have been interested in volunteering at the church working with children. My job is to assist in hosting singing, games and DIYs. Also I help the lead teachers and maintain discipline. Sometimes, those kids act out and are hard to reason with, but after spending time with them, I find them adorable. I remember one time I was amazed by the kids¡¦ performance in a singing presentation. Originally in the previous training stage, those kids were not willing to open their months to sing. Surprisingly, on the day of presentation, they all brought out the best part of themselves and put on a good show. That was the time when I felt what I did was all worthy.
I also do the voluntary work at Huashan Social Welfare Foundation on weekends. My work is to deliver meals to the elderly and keep them company. Those elderly people are happy to see us whenever we pay them a visit. I think the best gift we can give to them is to keep them company and make them feel less lonely.

Rou Ying: Volunteer at the library
The library is my favorite place of school. I like to hang out there as long as I have time. One time the librarian, Miss Ho, asked me if I would like to be a volunteer at the library, and I happily accepted her offer. I work at the library one day a week. The working time is very flexible. There are many different kinds of work at the library. Usually my work is to help get items in order for shelving, stamp books, pick up materials left on tables, or retire outdated books. Because I have done many different kinds of work, I get to know more about our school library and fall in love with reading.
In the future, I would like to be an environment conservation volunteer abroad. In order to be qualified for this job, I know I need to develop more skills like swimming, expression and learn a foreign language, like Spanish or English. More than that, I need to be brave and responsible for the work.

Jing Ling: Volunteer at office of student affairs
I am a school emcee and help get student presence records and class grading sheets in order at the office of student affairs. To be honest, being a school emcee is quite a challenging job for me because things go wrong in the ceremony from time to time. However, I do appreciate this job because it gives me the chance to react calmly and fast when something goes wrong. In the future, I hope I can be a volunteer to plant more trees in the city. My hope is to help our city become more beautiful.

Yu Fen, Yan Ru, Yu Jie: Volunteers at school
We all help clean the campus during winter and summer vacation. When we throw away bags of trash away and see our campus back to be a clean one, we all feel it¡¦s worthy. In the future, Yu Fen wants to be a volunteer at an animal shelter helping stray animals have better lives. Yan Ru plans to work at a hospital keeping patients company. Yu Jie would like to dedicate her time at libraries so that she can be close to books and have connections to more people.
