[Processing and Binding]The Wizard of Books~ Processing and Binding The processing might infer to all the
procedure from the papers were printed out to delivering the goods. For
example, coating, gold-stamping, spot varnish, embossing, binding, cutting,
folding, gluing, shape-cutting, box-gluing, stitching, etc. There are more
various types of printing processes with the technology progressing, which can
make these printed matters finer and look nicer. The processing work make a
book more valuable rather than just a simple book of papers, simply stapled
together. That’s why people said, “A hardcopy book is warmer than an e-book.
You just can’t stop loving it!” If you want to make the printed matter look
nicer, you can add a glossy film on the cover, and it will look different! The
staff in the picture is checking them. 14 Processing Ways of Printed Matters The most common post printing process is
coating. Sometimes we need coating to make the covers look nicer after printing,
and add more value to the products. There are many ways to process, varies in
trend and costs. The most common one is called Poly Propylene Coating, or as
known as glossy PP coating. Another one with different texture is called Matte
PP, also called matte PP Coating. Coating is to use machine to heat up the
plastic layer, and press the layer on the printed matters. Glossy PP coating
use glossy materials, matte PP coating use non-glossy materials. Glossy PP-Use hot
press machine to laminate glossy plastic layer on the paper. The advantage to
use glossy PP is that they are water-proofed, good-looking and it can make the
color look brighter. When you coat the PP layer, you don’t need to wait until
the ink is dry, but it is costly. You can identify if it is coated with PP
layer by many ways. If the surface looks glossy, and very smooth, it is coated
with PP layer. Or you can try to
tear it. If it is hard to tear it, it is PP coated. Matte PP-The
processing machine and layer are just like glossy PP. The only different is the
matte looking. It can make the printed matters look more elegant, and
non-reflective. The advantage also same as glossy PP, but it is more expensive.
The method to identify is also similar to glossy PP coating. The following processes are related to “coating”:

8 ways to bind the printed matters Put single pages printed matters together
to make a book, so the pages are easy to turn and store. It is called binding.
The most common ways to bind books, catalogues and albums are saddle stich,
perfect bound, soft case bound, wire bound, etc. There are 3 purposes of binding: prevent scattered
pages, easy to turn pages, easy to store. The general process is: press lines→fold pages→collect stacks/pages→staple (or stitch/glue)→glue cover (or
butterfly page)→trim the paper. The ways to bind has changed a lot with
technology progress. Unlike the previous processing, which requires so much
technology, the way of binding changes is less. But in response to different
needs, there are different bindings. For example, the most precious and most
worthwhile book, or a book with several editions, 1st edition, 2nd
edition and 3rd edition will be made into a hardcover edition! As
for the most common bindings, according to our group's observations from the
school library, most of them are perfect bound. We assume they are cheaper, and
thicker, so they are bound with glue. Here are a total of 8 binding methods in
below for everyone to have some basic ideas:
