type of elevation

     In 1935, for the concern of hygiene and security, the Japanese torn down one entrance of buildings on both sides of Wufu Street (Zhongshan Road nowadays) and expanded it as the street with the width of 15 meters. Arcades were constructed on shophouses of two sides. Elevation of buildings is the style of late Japanese Colonial Period. Ferroconcrete is the main structure. Elevation is based on light-colored tile or stucco washing finish. Windows are mostly large-scale instead of semi-circular arch ones. The appearance is simple, flat and the decoration is simple.

Elevation of No.149 (on the right) is preserved completely

1.Parapet: parapet is horizontal rectangle. It is not decorated and two sides are constructed with square column.

2.Window: the middle of the second floor is the gate which leads to balcony. Windows on both sides are vertical sliding windows of Japanese Colonial Period. On the third floor, there are three windows and the pattern is the same as those of the second floor.

3.Decoration: it is based on simple geometric patterns and it is simple and not complicated. English word “SO” in the middle means “Zhuang” in Japanese. It is the name of the store owner.

4.Balcony: it is on the second floor and made of cement sculpture. It is common part of elevation in modern buildings of Zhongshan Road.

5.Name of shop: on the purlin, it makes the characters “Shun Yuan Xing” by dark-colored

stucco washing finish which is directly set on the door header to highlight the shop sign. It is part of decoration.

6.Bracket: Fan-shaped bracket. It was originally the support and nowadays, it becomes the decoration.

7.Arcade: the shop on the first floor is withdrawn to become passage. It not only meets the climate in Taiwan which is hot and rainy, but also is the transition between inside and the street.
