Pay Love Forward
Pay Love Forward:The Educator, Mr. Wang Guan-Ying
Mr. Wang Guan-Ying was called Scavenging Man. He sold the trash that he collected to earn money and bought books for children in his community. That community is the Nanjichang Community. During his lifetime, he donated books to 137 universities and libraries in Taiwan and other countries. In Taipei City Library, there are six million books donated by Mr. Wang. Mr. Wang’s biggest dream was to build a library and give what he had back to the society.
When the borough chief was young, he received a lot of help from Mr. Wang, too. Like many of the people in the Nanjichang Community, Mr. Fang grew up in a poor family. His family did not have enough money to pay for his education, and they could not afford to buy books. At that time, Mr. Wang would buy tons of books for children to share and read. The borough chief liked spending time with Mr. Wang. He recalled that he always helped Mr. Wang organize books while chatting with him.
Influenced by Mr. Wang, the borough chief wanted to fulfill Mr. Wang’s will. In the interview, the borough chief also showed great appreciation for what Mr. Wang had taught him. He confessed that if it were not for Mr. Wang’s help and devotion, he would not be the borough chief we see today.
