He has a white beard, red cheeks, Book of Matchmaking in his left hand, and a cane in his right. People believe that Yuelao is responsible for matchmaking. Yuelao Xingjun is a deity responsible for matchmaking in Taoism. It is also a star between Altair and Vega.
Legend has it that during Tang Dynasty, a man by the name of Weigu met an old man sitting under the moon near a tavern. The old man was reading a book in his hand. Out of curiosity, Weigu asked the old man about the book. He then asked the old man what was in his satchel. The old man replied, “The red line is to tie the legs of would-be husbands and wives. People who are tied together, it doesn’t matter if they are enemies of each other or living far apart, they will get married.” Weigu got married to the woman the old man told him about, and he was in awe by how accurate the Book of Matchmaking was. The story was then passed down from generation to generation.
