Class promotion

To many students, sewing workshops were where clothes were made, but they did not know how they looked like inside and how did those mums and aunts work. We had visited sewing workshops and had interviews there, so we generally knew about the histories of sewing workshops and the how they were operated. The teacher asked us to make promotions in the class, not only to make the students to better understand sewing workshops, but also to make our exhibit introduction more complete. We could practice our public speaking that way and find our own shortcomings. We also made more people know the stories of sewing workshops.

1. Preparations before the promotion

To make the class promotion more successful, we had following discussion and preparations before going to the classroom:

  1. 1) What topics to talk about?
  2. 2) What materials to prepare?
  3. 3) To promote in what ways?
  4. 4) Who to be in charge of these topics?
  5. 5) Order and etiquette to go in and out of the classroom.
  6. 6) Which class and when to promote.
7) The making of working sheets.

The following are the results of our discussion concerning the above subjects:
  1. 1) Topics: History of sewing workshops, Introduction to sewing workshops, Works in sewing workshops, introduction of school uniform dissembling.
  2. 2) Making posters, preparing uniform, making PPT instructions.
  3. 3) The allocation of work: History of sewing workshops (Yi-ping and Xin Ouyang), Introduction to sewing workshops (An-peng and Ya-ting), Works in sewing workshops (Chi-yuan and Ting-yu), the introduction of school uniform dissembling (Bao-le and Jin-yu), PPT (Po-ta and Ya-guan).
  4. 4) Given the students’ comprehending capacities, we decided to make promotion in grade 5. It would be easier for them to understand. We asked the teacher to help us coordinate about the class and time.
5) Working sheets: it was about finding out whether there were sewing workshops near home and what the addresses were. We would later mark the locations on the map after the students’ research to see how many sewing workshops there were around our school.

Funny practice

We had to be careful when tearing down the clothes in order not to break the parts We worked together to pin the different parts on to the billboards

2. Promotion activities
With the company of Teacher Chan and Teacher Guo, we went to Grade 5 Class 2, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, and 16 for promotion, in the hope that students would understand sewing workshops better.

Look at my lively expressions and gestures

We all had the same gesture?

Buddy, do you understand?

Our school uniform was composed of these parts.

Can you guess what is the place in the picture?

The teacher came to help us.

3. Afterthoughts

1

Po-ta Chen

We made a lot of preparations before we went to the classroom. It was said swans had to paddle very hard under water to look elegant above the water. We felt we were just like swans in the lake that we had to make a lot of preparation for just a few minutes on the stage. The result was not very good and the students seemed to be unsatisfied with our instructions. This was frustrating, but this was a process of learning.

Yi-ping Liu

I teamed up with Ouyang for today’s class promotion. We introduced the past glory of Taiwan’s garment industry. We practiced many times so it was very successful. When we were in the first class, I was nervous and jammed. When we went into the second class, I was better at it. I was afraid to lose face when I was on the stage. Luckily, it went well, but I thought I did not do it well enough. The attitude of the first class was not good enough. As a listener, you got be more passionate and attentive. Otherwise the speaker would lose confidence.

3

Jin-yu Chen

Bao-le Chen and I promoted the composition and dissembling pictures of Lu Jiang Elementary School uniform. As I had a sore throat, he was speaking most of the time. Our voice was too small.

4

Chi-yuan Huang

I forget that I had to make the class promotion that day. I had not prepared at all and practiced as much as I could before going on to the stage. Although I finished the whole introduction, I was very nervous. We did worse than last time, so we had to work on our speaking abilities. Through this class promotion, I found myself to be braver. I could not only speak louder, but also in front many people. I learned a lot from this class promotion.

5

Ya-guan Wang

I listened very carefully to other students’ introductions and found their voice was too small. The students under stage might not hear them. They were too nervous, with there hands clutching clothes and trousers. The students were not active after hearing our introduction, which made us feel it, was not worth the effort. So I would listen more attentively if I were the listener in the future. I would try not to make the same mistakes the speakers made. I did not know my own shortcoming before. Now after I’ve watched others’ speaking, I had seen those shortcomings clearly. Class promotion was a very good experience.

6

An-peng Wu

I thought the listeners were very important as they were part of the performance. Without them, the performance would be of no meaning no matter how great it would be. Something was lost. Applause was even more important as it would give strength and confidence to the people on the stage. This would make them keep working toward their goals.

8

Xin Ouyang

The contents we were to introduce were from the textbooks. Although we had reports before and had practiced as well, we were nervous on the stage, clutching our trousers. We would jam and make mistakes. There was little response after we finished. It seemed that they did not understand very well. Maybe our pronunciation was not clear enough. Or maybe they had no interest in this topic. We finally made it through. I thought we had to make it funny to arouse their interest. If so, the promotion effect would be better.

9

Ting-yu Li

When I was doing the promotion, I was nervous and jammed. I did not know how to make gestures. So it was worse than the last time. Maybe I should have taken notes so that I would not forget the words and make the promotion unsmooth.

10

Ya-ting Tsao

An-peng Wu and I were so nervous that we forgot the words in the class promotion. It was a mess and we left the stage in embarrassment. There was little applause under the stage, which made me felt it was failure. They might have scored us 50 or even lower, based on their expressions and applauses. They looked reluctant, but they taught us a lesson that we had to take notes and rehearse beforehand. We should not have rushed to the stage.
