Development History of Taiwan Railway Yuanlin Train Station Text/Teacher Mei-tu Chiu
The railway in Taiwan was first built in 1887, in 1905, the official railway in Changhua County was completed, first Ershui Station was put into operation on January 15, and then Changhua Station, Huatan Station, Yuanlin Station, Shetou Station, Tianchung Station were put into operation on March 26.
Three railways gathering in Yuanlin Street
The first director of Yuanlin Post was Yasutaro Ishii, it was said that “Yuanlin train is extremely ordinary”. In 1912, the light rail in Yuanlin was paved, and a light station was built in the south of Yuanlin Post. In 1919, Taiwan Sugar Yuanlin Station was set in the west of Yuanlin Post platform. The three railways gathered in Yuanlin Street, driving the development of business district in front of the station.

The period after World War II
The 228 Incident in 1947 spread to the ship in front of Yuanlin Train Station. In 1949 and 1953, Yuanlin Train Station was reconstructed for twice, and in 1955, it was upgraded as a first Class B station. In 1960, Yongjing flag stop within the jurisdiction of Yuanlin was established, in 1961, Yuanlin Train Station was reconstructed as two-floor form, and a station-crossing overpass was reconstructed. In April 1976, in the level crossing of Zhengxi Road in Dacun Township with the jurisdiction of Yuanlin Station, a Changhua passenger bus full of students was destroyed by a train of Taiwan Railway, and the female students who died in the disaster were buried in the “Lady Shrine” in Dacun Township.
Entering the times of electrification
The railway in Taiwan was electrified in 1979, there were drivers and locomotive assistants and operation automation mark, supporting with the central CTC signal control. Yuanlin Train Station belongs to a mountainous line. The jurisdiction of Yuanlin Train Station ranges from Dacun Station in the north to Yongjing flag stop in the south, with a total length of 8km, the east of the railway are Tianchungyang Neighborhood, Huilia Neighborhood, Heping Neighborhood; the west are Sanyi Neighborhood, Hsinsheng Neighborhood, Nanping Neighborhood. In 2000, the average passenger volume in a single day was about 8,000, with a daily business of 830,000 NTD, and this is was renowned as the peak year of Yuanlin Train Station.
Put into operation for hundred of years
In 2005, there were staffs in Yuanlin Train Station, including the staff in the station agent office, staffs of ticket check, ticket sales, luggage, traveling, cargo, dispatching (outdoor) and duty watch. In June, the ceremony for the 118th anniversary of Taiwan Railway and celebration of 100th anniversary of railway operation in Central Taiwan was held, the successfully repaired old steam train CK124 reappeared in Ershui –Fengyuan Railway, a memorial platform ticket and hard seat ticket, the steam train CK124 departed from Ershui and passed through Tianzhong, Shetou, Yuanlin, Huatan, Changhua, Taichung Train Station, Fengyuan Train Station.
Yuanlin elevated railway
Until September 2007 was the elevated railway project in Yuanlin commenced, on November 2, 2014, Yuanlin Elevated Station was put into operation, making the Yuanlin level crossing for 110 years become history. The space under the Yuanlin Elevated Railway will be planned in 2015, and Yuanlin Train Station will become a new landmark in Taiwan Railway.
