Grandma Yang

We visited a donator Grandma Yang. She has regularly brought bread to the Center two times a week, since 2003. Knowing her goodness, we became very eager to know more about her. We also wanted to introduce her to everybody and hoped her story would inspire all of you. So we invited Teacher Huang jiereng and teacher Huang shuyun to have an interview with Grandma Yang.

◣1. When did you notice the charity Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped?

I heard that the charity was led by a Korean sister and took care of Taiwanese disabled people. I was touched by her virtue, so I decided to do my best to help them.

◣2. When did you start sending bread to the Center ?

Because of my husband's death, I realized that money wasn't everything. I made up my mind to do something meaningful.

◣3. How often do you send bread to Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped ?

. I used to send bread to the Center twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Now I'm busier than before, therefore I just send bread there once a week, mostly on Tuesdays.

◣4. If the economic environment worsened, would you still send bread to the Center ?

Yes, unless it is a day off or a typhoon day, then I stopped it. I will send bread every week shine or rain, no matter whether my income is high or low.

◣5. How many pieces of bread do you bring each time?

About twenty or thirty pieces of bread.

◣6. Do you always pick out the bread that you send every time??

No, I don’t. I am busy, and therefore I don’t have time to slowly pick out the bread every time. As long as we have some bread, we will bring it all to the Center.

◣7. Will you introduce Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped to your family or friends, and go there to be a volunteer together?

I am so busy that I can’t go there to be a volunteer. But I told my relatives and friends that if they have free time, they can go there for a visit, or to donate something. Mrs. Young is kind and frank.

◣8. Do your family oppose your donation?

No, I am doing goodness, and I am not just spending money randomly.

◣9. Besides donation to Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped, do you go to any other charities to serve?

No. We have to do business, therefore we don’t have much time to be a volunteer.

◣10. Do you pray for anything in your mind when you bring bread to the Center?

I don't pray for anything, but just wish that the children there can enjoy the food happily. As long as they eat happily, I'll be very glad.

Today we went to a temple to visit the bread donator, Grandma Yang. She is a very enthusiastic person. Her love does not differentiate between religions. Although she believes in Taoism, she is still very generous on donating bread to those children at a Catholic Center. Grandma Yang also built a temple in order to provide the believers a place for spiritual sustenance and dependence.

I learned a lot from her. She thought the pursuits of business success, wealth, good relationships, entertainment, are less important than doing goodness to others. She has testified that while achieving her goals of wealth, relationships, and pleasure, there was still a deep void inside, a feeling of emptiness that nothing seemed to fill. So, she thought that life is nothing but doing more good things. I feel that these words contain some truth. After all, after death nothing can be taken away, only our honor and gracious character can be memorized. While most people chase for fortune, I deeply admire Grandma Yang's great love. Who says that only well-known people can do charity? There are many nobodies in our society. They devoted themselves to improving our society without asking for good fame.
