Origin of Participating in Guiding Training

Although we have been Cheng-Kung Office Park many times, we didn't know much about. If we want to promote the Park, we need to learn the environment in the Park, and introduce its Ecosystem to visitors. The instructors in the Park will teach us guiding techniques and knowledge about Ecosystem, then we will guide visitors based on what we learned. It will make sure to reach the best promotion.
Besides, all the voluntary guides already had basic and advanced training courses. They know everything about the Park. We are willing to lean from these senior guides. At first, we will ask instructors for teaching us, and then we will study hard to finish the final web promotion for Cheng-Kung Office Park.

Training Log

11.10 (Sun) Learning about Cheng-Kung Office Park

This Sunday, we visited Cheng-Kung Office Park in the Baguashan Mountain. Luckily, we had a chance to join the butterfly guide by voluntary guide from Butterfly Conservation Organization, the butterfly guiding only held on the first Sunday every month. We followed other visitors to listen to the guide. Today's topics are introduction of leaf arrangement and honey plants. The guide also mentioned Swallowtail butterfly, its larva looks like bird poo. When the caterpillar is being touched, its feelers stretched out. It looks like it says hi to us. In the end, the quiz time, we correctly answer many questions, getting some rewards.

11.26 (Tue) Recording junior grade's field trip

Today is sunny day, four of us, Yan Bo-Lin, Zhou Ke-Hong, Li Yang-Jun and Lai Yi-Sheng, followed junior grade to their field trip because they were going to Cheng-Kung Office Park. As we arrived, we separated into two groups to learn from two different senior guides. We learned a lot of plants, at the lunch break, the guides asked us to make presentation to each other.

Yang-Jun and I (Zhou Ke-Hong) were in the group which instructor is teacher Huang Zhi-Cheng. We learned a lot of things that we didn't know before in the following two hours. For example, grass has three advantages, holding moisture, scenic view and keeping warm. Grass can loose soil, after it is withered, it can be fertilizer. We also learned the differences between arbor and shrub. They can be told by their trunks. Arbor has obvious trunk, but shrub doesn't. The teacher showed us the Swamp Oak and River Oak to make a comparison. In addition, we were curious about the sign in the Herb Garden. The sign says, "Watch, Hear, Ask and Touch", which is a Chinese diagnosis method. The Garden is designed by Li Zhen-Hui, an herb expert living in Changhua.

Yi-Sheng and Bo-Lin learned a lot from teacher Lin. Everyone tried to answer the questions in the quiz time. Teacher Lin also make a brief introduction to the plants, read below:
1. Teak: The trunk can be made as furniture, or sleeper to support railway track. If you rub Teak's leaf, its liquid will turn red when expose to air.
The red liquid always used for dying food, such as hung kuei cakes and red Tangyuan.
2. Camphor Tree: The skin is chapping. Usually the tree is made as Camphor essential oil and mothball.

Attending the park guides always make you learn something new.

12.01 (Sun) Unexpected Lessons in the Military Ruins

We gathered in the entrance of school and took school teacher's car to explore around the Cheng-Kung Office Park to see other interesting spots, except Changhua Great Buddha Statue of Baguashan Mountain. Our first stop is Fountain of Youth. We met teacher Liu, who came here to take a photo of the fountain for teaching material.
We seized a chance to introduce him Cheng-Kung Office Park. He said he had seen the building and thought it's just a school, he didn't know there are secrets in it. Also he mentioned his military experience. He told us that being a solider is not as fun as we see in the movies. In addition, he mentioned the outdoor tub usually is built in the center of the camp; it can be not only for cleaning body but for putting out the fire if the buildings in the camp are on fire. Teacher Liu still the story about trench warfare during Vietnam War. He is such an interesting man! In the end, we wanted to hear more stories from him, but his wife kept asked him to go home, he had no time.

Thanks for the stories and lessons, teacher Liu.

When we were leaving from the Park, we bumped into Ms. Lin. She had no ideas where is it. Our school teacher told us it was a chance to show what we learned. And then we came to her to introduce the Park, we chatted a little. After that, school teacher gave us a compliment for our debut.

12.04 (Wed) Learning animals in the Park.

Today teacher Chen Mei-Juan came to our class to teach us. This is her first visit to Nan Hsing elementary school. Teacher Chen introduced many common animals and plants in the Park, also show us the fruits, taxidermy Rhino beetles and Stag beetles. The class really enjoyed.
I think birds' voices are interesting. Teacher Chen presented the birds in the Park by not only the pictures but also imitating their calls. For instance, Black Drongo tweets like "schweep-schweep"; Black Bulbul sounds like meowing. If you hear something is meowing and there is no cat, that is probably Black Bulbul; Chinese Bulbul's call sounds like a kind of snack, "chocolate, chocolate"; it also has another call for warning which sounds like machine gun firing.(dadadada)
Birds are fascinating; however, squirrels are the cutest. Red-bellied tree squirrel has various voices; one is "dadada" which is like the call of Schlegel's Japanese Gecko. I was so glad that I obtained much knowledge this morning. In the end of the class, all the class had photos with teacher Chen, what a wonderful memory.

After school, teacher Chen told us some tips to guiding. She said, "Remember smiling, and make your guiding more intriguing. Introduce yourself at first, and then describe the spots in the Park in 30 to 60 seconds. The crucial part is time controlling. And don't swipe your baton, only use for pointing at objects you are going to introduce, otherwise the audience may report. One more thing, tell the kid audience the Dos & Don'ts. Remember the 3 rules, 'Stop, observe and listen.' To make sure all the kids under your control, you can set a watchword, for example, when you say 'Everyone!', they can reply with 'Yes!'. You can also drag kids' attention by random quiz & reward game ."
I think I got more new things this time. We can turn the lessons today into our guiding materials. I appreciate teacher Chen helped us so much. I wish I can be like her, an interesting, attractive guide.

12.05 (Thu) Learning in the Herb Garden

What a happy day! Today we were going to visit Herb Garden. Teacher Lu brought us to the garden. Every plant in the garden is edible. Many plants are new to us. We kept taking notes about them. Teacher Lu told us to learn different herbs by smell, observation and touch. There is a bond between herbs and human. Teacher Lu gave us some Mt. Lemmon Marigold so that we can plant them in our places. He also gave us decoration made of leaves, seeds and fruits etc. We got plenty of things in the end, physically and mentally!

Today is also the day of 5th grade students' field trip. We followed them to Green Camp, dividing ourselves into two groups. We seldom attended the guide training on Saturdays. The classmates took notes for us, thank them! While we were back to the school, we shared what we learned with everyone on the school bus.

12.07, 12.14 Learning guiding on Saturday morning

We had attended guide on Saturdays several times. The teachers are different person every time, every teacher has their style. We can learn various techniques and tips on guiding and knowledge. I hope that I can meet different people just like them, to guide people. Today's instructor is teacher Xue, he took us to Jiangjun Road to see three similar plants, which are Hong Kong orchid tree, Butterfly tree and orchid tree. Hong Kong orchid tree is a hybrid species of Butterfly tree and orchid tree, so it doesn't acquire reproduction. Then we visited Happy Farm. Sweet potato's flower looks similar to Morning Glory. Sweet potato's leaves, Morning Glory and Water Spinach are Convolvulus family. Green Fox-tail is called energy plant and long-lived plant. When you rub Lemon Grass, you will smell a sour and lemon scent from the leaves. Lemon Grass is the main ingredient for Lemon Grass hot pot. We knew so many vegetables. It all thanks to the trees, their leaves can fertilize the Earth.

Teacher Wang showed us two groups of plants which look similar. First group are Taro and Giant Upright Elephant Ear, the difference between two is: When you pour the water to their leaves, water can be separated into drops on Taro's leaves, on other hand, water can splash over Giant Upright Elephant Ear. The second group is Lemon Grass and Guinea Grass, they have similar appearance. Guinea Grass is flammable, which is foreign species. It will be set on fire, if there is lightening, or someone drops lighted cigarette. Today I also learned that we can send Carina fruits as wedding gift because Carina has many fruits, which is a blessing, means "Having many offspring." What s pleasure day! I learned so many things.

12.20 (Fri) Promoting correct ideas of Ecosystem Conservation

Teacher Huang inspired me a lot, from correct ideas of ecosystem conservation to pay attention on environment changes. He argues that the voluntary guiding jobs can bring positive effect to people.

The threat to the nature is people's favor. People always love planting the same species, such as the path of Cherry Blossom or Cotton Tree. Single species can spread diseases to one another. Additionally, planting trees in the mountain will destroy the nature, it should be avoided. Some people think they are performing kindness, they don't know they are destroying the ecosystem. Teacher Huang said the guides can promote these ideas while guiding; He hopes it can bring some supports.

01.29 (Wed) Recognizing Foreign plants

Although the winter break came, we still actively study. Teacher is today's instructor. We still remembered last time we helping remove Bitter Vine. From then on, when we see the vine, we eradicate it. Apart from Bitter Vine, Railroad-creeper and Paper Flower are also the threat to the environment. Foreign plants have greater adaptation, only plant after you study it. In this way, we can reduce the damage to the nature. We learned a lesson today.

The master teaches the trade, but the perfection of the apprentice's skill depends on his own efforts.

How to make progress on my guiding skill after training? This is the key phrase that many voluntary guides will face. Teacher Chen Mei-Juan and Huang Zhi-Cheng both shared the same idea in the interview. Despite the fact that we learned tips, and asked teachers to help us improve our guiding skills, and practiced many times in the school, it is different when you are in the real performance of guiding. Listen to the teachers' guide is the way to learn, nevertheless, every teacher has their own techniques in spite of the same objects or trails. We cannot copy all of them. Only standing on the stage can gives lessons. We learn and improve through every time we guide. In next guide, I will choose the objects that I have guided before. I will observe how other teachers guide to improve my weakness. We hope that by the contribution of Green Explorers; we can share and promote the ideas of ecosystem and environment conservation with people and make more people care about our planet.
