Research Result
Summing up the above questionnaires
and interviews, we found there are both
similarities and differences among their
opinions. They are all satisfied with
the facility, however they view differently
in the book preference, check-out
system , the shortage of volunteers and
the prospects. In order to balance
our findings, we interviewed three public
libraries nearby.
The information we got from the interviews
indicates that most of the volunteers in
public libraries are housekeepers aged from
40 to 50. Females are also more than
males like that in our school library. The
paragraph below is our conclusion:
(1)The collection of comic books should depend on its content and purpose
According to the questionnaires,
students prefer to read comic books. However,
we are curious that why there still are
comic book collections if the teacher don’t
recommend students to read them. The librarian
Aunt Yi-Ting explained that the comic books
in the library are full of knowledge, and
they are much different from other entertaining
comic books we find off campus.
(2)To recruit volunteers from retired faculty and alumni
Most of the volunteers in our library
are the parents of our students due they
can have the similar daily routine as their
children. However, most of the
volunteers in public libraries are retired
teachers. Therefore, we are thinking
the possibility of recruiting volunteers
from our retired teachers an alumni.
(3)The necessity of the book-washing mechanism
The most special work for the volunteers
in our library is washing the books. Since
we are short of the budget in buying UV
sterilizing machines, the volunteers have
to wash the books one after another by hand.
It’s really a hard work.
(4)To integrate the school library and public libraries to increase the circulation of books
The collection of books in public
libraries is much bigger than that in our
library. Therefore if we encourage
our students to borrow books from the public
libraries, we may solve the problem of slow
replacement of books.
(5)To automate and computerize to save the labor power
Besides recruiting volunteers from
the community and college students, it’s
a good idea to automate and computerize
the librarian system. Once the librarian
system has been automated and computerized,
we don’t need that many volunteers to work
for our library.
