2.Description of “Our Community”:

Xisong Elementary School has 77 years of history and is situated in the financial center of Songshan District in Taipei City. The school has a total of 64 classes, with 54 general classes, 2 special resources classes, and 7 kindergarten classes, and counts over 1200 students and staff.  The source of our spiritual food, the school library, was built in 1968. In 2014, we moved our library to Chunghsing Building and established another branch at Beihsing Building. We also gave the library a new name - Joy Books.  Joy Books has a a collection of over 47,000 books. An average of two- to three hundred books are replaced every year.  There are 4 city libraries near Xisong Elementary school, namely Znglun, Songshan, Qiming, and Sanmin branch libraries.

Currently, Joy Books has 25 volunteer staff carrying out various responsibilities in library management.  Most of these volunteers are parents of students studying in our school.  Xisong Elementary School has promoted a good habit of reading for many years. The library and library volunteers play extremely important roles for the school's policy.

3.Summary of Our Project:

Volunteer librarians have a very heavy workload. We have planned the following research directives to investigate the spirit of service, provide a detailed coverage of library work, raise awareness of the selfless contributions made by our volunteers:

  • 1.Understand the background of the school volunteer librarians and explore the motivations and reasons of their contributions.

  • 2.Investigate the possible issues that volunteer librarians may encounter.

  • 3.Interview teachers that are involved in library work to obtain balanced answers to the questions above.

  • 4.Attempt to record and create a short film promoting the educational resources provided by our library. This would also involve editing work and incorporate learning for all subjects.

  • 5.Learn about the methods of advertising and promotion. We would make use of class-level promotions to introduce the spirit of our volunteer librarians and the proper way of utilizing library resources into the life of every Xisong student.

  • 6.Ask for recommendations from experts in library volunteer work to improve the influence of our project in addition to the learning experience.

To carry out our research project, we went to many city libraries, recorded a vast amount of videos and interviewed many people.  The amount of resources available online is quite limited. Almost all of our materials have been derived from personal observations and interviews. However, our experience and expertise also increased, allowing us to confidently implement our library resources educational awareness programs.  We hope that our website is able to inform people about the contributions made by our volunteer librarians, honor the spirit of volunteer work, and inspire everyone in our school.

4.Our Computers and Internet Access:

1.Internet environment of our school: Computer labs. Each computer terminal in our computer lab is connected to an optical cable and linked to the Taipei City Educational Network Center and then to the Taiwan Academic Network (TANet).  We mostly made use of the noon-time break, afterschool hours, and morning self-study sessions to discuss about our project, search and generate webpage contents, and organize our data.

2.Internet environment in our team members' homes: ADSL or cable network

3.Methods of processing information by our team members: Team members would make use of the school's network resources and Gmail document sharing on Cloud to send and receive mail or to go online to look at the newest notifications. Team members also accessed the network drives established by our teachers as well as portable memory devices. Information processing was done in both our homes and the school.

5.Problems We Had To Overcome:  1.Designing interview questions

We must first document our interview questions as a sign of respect to our interviewees.  We must first begin with reviewing and collecting the background information of our interviewees in order to design meaningful questions relevant to our website.  This process took up a lot of time and was easy to mess up. If we made a mistake, we must redesign our questions and schedule a repeat interview.  Fortunately, after receiving feedback from our first interviewee, we were able to adjust our interview questions at once to ensure success in subsequent interviews.

2.Data organization took up even more time

Sometimes there were really a lot of data that must be reviewed in detail to remove wrong data. This process was extremely dependent on everyone's patience and commitment.  After interviewing the volunteer librarians and teaching staff, we must type out the interviews. The interviewees may have a great deal to say, and we must go over these audio files repeatedly since we are not professional typists. This took a great deal of time.

3.First interview

The website design competition gave us the opportunity to interview volunteer librarians and teachers both inside and outside our school.  We felt very nervous before the interview.  We were quite shy and did not raise many questions when we began our interview. But we later got used to the process and this greatly encouraged us.  After interviewing our first library volunteer, our confidence improved and we no longer felt afraid for the subsequent interviews.

4.Difficulties in data recording

When typing out our reviews or recording questions, we may be stuck due to poor handwriting. If this happens, we would focus on the main points and think about the matter once more to prevent the same mistake from happening again.

5.Significant delays in work progress

Sometimes our teachers would give us new assignments before we complete the ones we have on our hands. We may have to carry out interviews even before completing our homework, and would have to make up for it with our precious personal time. However, we knew that we could complete our work if we work hard enough.  Delays in work progress could happen if team members can't come or arrive late during morning self-study sessions or noon-time recess and assembly.

6.Learning about time management

Every member in our team were also involved in school societies and activities in addition to everyday homework assignments. Classes on music and arts afterschool must be attended as well. With such a busy schedule, time management becomes even more critical when we participated in the website design competition this semester.  We learned how to come up with the most efficient arrangements within the shortest possible time and accomplish our objectives during the course of this project.

7.Preparing for the library resources educational awareness programs

We carried out a total of 6 class-level educational announcements for our library resources. A great deal of preparatory work must be implemented before making these announcements. Our team members must first explain the details of these announcements to the teachers of every class and to confirm the location and time for making the announcements.  We finally obtained the support of many home-room teachers after a great deal of effort, and successfully provided our library resources educational announcements.

8.Developing IT skills

Before participating in this website design competition, our IT skills were restricted to typing in Chinese, English, and using the Internet to search for information. With the guidance of our teachers, we learned how to create presentations, videos and, most importantly, web ages. Our IT skills really improved by a lot.

6.Afterthoughts:

For the past 3 months, the Cyberfair Project gave us the opportunity to play the role of a reporter, announcer, and short film narrator for the first time.  Additionally, we learned about knowledge not taught in books, such as how to promote and teach in class, writing invitation cards, and data organization.  In addition to these experiences and lessons, we had the precious opportunity to make personal contact with our interviewees.  We learned a lot during these interviews and hope that we can emulate their actions in the future.

The process of the website design competition was strenuous, but deep in our hearts, we believe that we can achieve great things and success through working together and dedication.

This belief helped us to overcome every challenge before us and allowed us to successfully complete the project.  During the course of the project, every person, event, and object we've encountered were part of our great experience. The Library CEO project helped us form a most valuable bond between the team members! Most importantly, we were able to appreciate the value and spirit of volunteering of our library volunteers. Such inspiration and experience would help us convince others to join them in their work.
