Project Elements

How does your activities and research meet the goals and mission of Cyberfair?

Our topic of the monographic study is :Library CEO – the creative, effective, and outstanding volunteers in the library ! We did the exclusive interview aimed at the service concept and content of work of the library volunteers. The research team did the library education promotion through the Research Result to every graders and put library volunteer into practice by themselves. We hope that the service concept of library volunteer can plow deeply at each corner where there is reading atmosphere .

*How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The Cyberfair Project helped us learn about the formulation of a project theme, establishment of a research plan, implementation of the plan, and completing our project via group discussion and data collection.  During the course of our investigation, we integrated and extended the contents of many subjects and skills. We hope that this research would influence future learning such that it would no longer be restricted to textbooks and classrooms. We believe that such learning models would guide us towards a better and more exciting future!

(1)Linguistic field

Language is one of the indispensable means of communication in this world. Many people have good language skills, but they would also to communicate to know how other people are feeling. Communication is the only method of knowing how to do different things. Hence, our team made use of listening, speaking, reading, and writing methods to generate our report. For example, our methods include interviewing library volunteers, making class announcements, typing, and reading about relevant information in the Internet. Hence, the Cyberfair Project has provided great assistance to our language skills.  Additionally, we also learned about writing skills that included the basic structure of introducing the topic, elaborating the arguments, transforming the theme, and integrating different perspectives. We were able to find many mistakes and wrongly used idioms in the essays and correct them. Hence, we were more than ordinary scribes. The experience helped us become great literary experts not unlike Ouyang Xiu.

(2)Social field

The topic of our research was volunteer work as well as the relevant knowledge and skills that we could apply during our daily lives and when interacting with the society.  For example, we practiced oral presentations, making invitations, and carrying out in-depth interviews. We also learned how to transform acquired information into a comprehensive report as well as the techniques of writing invitation cards. We learned about skills such as basic etiquette which would be necessary for the invitation cards in addition to the techniques of preparing and carrying out interviews.  Video recording also posed a great challenge to us. We are very thankful for our instructor of this project.

(3)IT field

Modern computer IT technologies allow us to get intimate with the exciting lives of our volunteer librarians. These advanced technologies also provided a small step towards globalization for the soft power of our school volunteers.  We also used digital techniques provided online on video recording, such as far focus, mid focus, and near focus. These professional terminologies and skills in video recording transformed us from unseasoned amateurs to experts in video editing capable of generating quality material for the silver screen.

(4)Various Activities

A person working on a monumental work will expend more time and effort than collaborative team work. This principle helped us to realize the power of team work. Team work not only improved our efficiency, it also strengthened the bond between us. We were able to identify areas with problems and correct them through group discussions. When we ran out of ideas, we were able to get help from our teachers and students to improve the consistency and flow of the contents of our project.  Before creating the storyboards, we had to define the responsibilities of each team member and avoid confrontations or disturbing their schedules. Despite these efforts, we met some problems or team conflicts such as disagreements during discussions or getting distracted by games when we were supposed to search for information. The work of the library volunteers and teacher was also affected as our teacher filmed scenes in the library. However, these were the opportunities for learning new lessons. So long as everyone is willing to accept, discuss, and compliment each other, we would definitely succeed in creating a work that everyone can be proud of.

(5)Art & Culture

We integrated art into our designs when carrying out the Cyberfair Project. Every student made use of their personal artistic techniques to create a mind map and storyboard for our scripts. This was a very beneficial learning experience for all of us.  We made use of simple diagrams, sketches and illustrations in the storyboards so that the resulting picture would be as lively as 3D animation. We also found some light music such as Pachelbel's Canon played using a harp as our background music so that our short film would not be too dull.  When generating the mind map, we used four squiggly lines to introduce our learning experience, personal information, what we like and dislike, our personal expectations and our perspectives on the CEO project. The purpose of these data was to enrich the contents of our project. We learned a lot about each other through this as well.

*Our mission to introduce our local community and society

In order to satisfy the reading needs of over 1300 students and staff in Xisong Elementary School, two libraries were built. One would be situated in Beihsing Building, while the other would be located in Chunghsing Building.  The Chunghsing Building library would be the main library with more supporting volunteers. It is more spacious and its collection more extensive, with books for lower, intermediate and upper level students. The facilities provided in this library would also be more complete. Beihsing Building Library would be the branch, with a smaller number of supporting volunteers. Because Beihsing Building contain classrooms for 4th to 6th grade students, the books in this library would be for intermediate and upper level students. The area is about half of that of the Chunghsing library, with less facilities provided.

Volunteer librarians for our school are quite unique when compared to those in the community libraries.  Volunteer librarians in our school belong to the Sunflower Volunteer Group. Nearly all of them are parents of our students, and come in all ages. Some of them are grandparents of our classmates. These volunteers are not paid, and it comes as no surprise that all of them have a passion for service.  Because of our school's commitment to popularize and improve reading skills, student reading habits in our school has changed for the better and library usage rates have increased as well. However, since there are less and less people having children, we end up with reduced manpower available for our library volunteers  Hence, our team hopes to use this Cyberfair Project to find the best measure against this phenomenon. We also hope that the dedication to service by our volunteer librarians would inspire every student reader and become part of our school's unique ethical education.

*What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After forming the Library CEO team, we most made use of our morning self-study sessions and lunch breaks to carry out discussions and generate material for our project. Our teacher instructor expected everyone to know about effective time management.  In addition to completing our homework assignments, we must also complete the various tasks associated with the Cyberfair Project punctually. Although we had to sacrifice our own personal time and underwent a lot of stress spiritually and physically, we learned about things that other classmates didn't through this strenuous experience.  Through repeated revisions, practice, discussions and communication, our team members quietly acquired new skills and became more mature.  During the interviews and creating of our announcement videos, our once-shy team members transformed into a confident band well-versed in face-to-face communication with the interviewees as well as various techniques needed in filming videos and stage performance. All these tasks provided us with precious experience.  We hope that such training would impart a passionate thirst for knowledge for every member in our team.

*Intellectual Properties

All the texts seen in the web page are organized from materials acquired from interviews carried out personally by our team members. All the interview transcripts have been reviewed by the interviewees and signed so that we may utilize these materials for our web pages. Should our web page reference published information, we will also clearly provide the source or relevant link in order to protect the rights of the original author.  In order to clearly display the webpage of our research project, we also supplemented our interview, photographs, video and audio recordings with books, journals, and online information about volunteers and volunteer librarians. In order to respect intellectual property rights, we paid extra attention to the use of any photograph, picture, music and text.  All photographs used in our webpages are taken by our teachers and students. We have acquired the photographers' consent to display them.

*Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises

The Cyberfair Project that we participated in lasted almost six months. This experience provided us with a lot of opportunities to do things that we never did before. We played the role of young interviewers, library resource educational announcers, and even worked directly as young volunteers for the library.  We acquired knowledge and skills not taught in books, such as how to promote library resources, how to design invitation cards, and how to organize data.  In addition to these experiences and lessons, we had the precious opportunity to make personal contact with our volunteer librarians.  Our interviews allowed us to acquire in-depth understanding  of the selfless work ethics and value of the work provided by our volunteer librarians.  From that moment, we hoped that we could also integrate our research findings into a personal achievement and realization process, and become young volunteers contributing to both our libraries and reading.

Although the Cyberfair Project involved quite a lot of work, we believe that team work would allow us to overcome all difficulties and help us ultimately gain success.  During this six months, all the people, events, and things that we came across provided us with a wonderful experience. I believe that the camaraderie that we have generated in our Library CEO Team served as the most powerful force motivating us to be volunteer librarians.
