At that time, mobile phones were used for basic functions. This kind of mobile phones usually specialized in texting, calling, or downloading some easy games. Because of people’s daily routine, calls were more frequent in daytime, and night time calls were about half as much. Very few calls happened in the middle of nights. The telecommunication companies wanted to find ways to get people to use more of their services around the clock.
What telecommunication companies needed was fast transmission speed of data, and advanced service. The industry was looking for services that could help people’s daily lives. The service included connecting to the internet anytime and anywhere to do various tasks, such as checking E-mails. However, at that time, they were already very busy dealing with 2G phones. They did not have time or resources to develop new mobile phones to meet what the industry needed.
Just then, HTC appeared! HTC, with the power of creativity and the ability to develop, it stepped into this huge opportunity of combining PDA with phones with wireless communication functions.
HTC combined phones with PDAs and opened the door to the 3G era.
