Interview of Chutang Township Farmers Association Mr. Guang-hsin Chan

What is the story behind Chutang Township Farmers Association assisting you to grow and produce “Taigeng No. 9 Premium Rice?”

A: Since the government allowed for rice to be imported, Taiwanese farmers have had to face foreign challenges, and so in order to accept this challenge, Chutang Township Farmers Association began to actively guide farmers in improving their cultivation skills so that farms produce better quality rice and bring in better prices. One of the most successful crops was “Taigeng No. 9 Premium Rice.”

What is the research background of Taigeng No. 9 Premium Rice?

A: As our people began to look for better quality instead of quantity in rice, with research assistance from the Taichung Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Chutang Township office and Farmers Association collaborated to counsel farmers into growing “Taigeng No. 9 Premium Rice.” With such strong background support, the excellent began to win numerous awards in national competitions and contests.

What is the developmental history of the “Rice Quality Contest?”

A: Due to limitations in manpower and resources, the “Rice Quality Contest” was originally a localized contest limited to townships and villages, and were held by local farmers associations. In the second quarter of 1999, there began to be “country-wide” contests, in the second quarter of 2002 “region-wide” contests were established, and finally in 2004 there began to be “National Rice Quality Contests.” Since 2007, the top tens rice varieties have been selected each year for the “Superior Quality Award.”

What are the award records for Chutang Township “Taigeng No. 9 Premium Rice?”

A: After it won the first prize at the “Rice Quality Contest” in 2005, it won the second prize in the 2006 contest, then was awarded consecutively with the “Superior Quality Award” from 2007 to 2010.

What are your thoughts on advocating “Taigeng No. 9 Premium Rice?”

A: Taigeng No. 9 Premium Rice is planted in many places around the island, but only the rice of Chutang Township has received so many awards. This is the fruitful result of collaborative effort between the Taichung Agricultural Research & Extension Station, the Farmers Association, and local farmers, out of a united wish to produce the best quality rice for our fellow countrymen, and hence we have a “four-win” situation! We are grateful for the blessings we have received, for the bounty of Chuoshui River, and we will strive to work harder and produce better results in the future!
