December 25th is not only Constitutional Day, but also a great day for our school and community: it is the day on which we hold our school anniversary celebrations and community athletic games. Very early we arrived at school, hardly able to contain our excitement, because aside from martial arts performances made by the whole school, our Lion Dance Troupe would be performing intricate martial arts movements and lion dances.
After we tidied the school premises, parents and families began arriving. The day started at 8:10am with the entire student body assembling to perform martial arts, after which our dance troupe performed a different and more advanced martial arts sequence, followed by the pièce de résistance: our Lion Dance performance.
We listened for the beat of the drum and lifted the lions’ heads, while the troupe members controlling the tail end of our lions also placed themselves in position. At the second beat of the drum, “dong!”, we began our lion dance, we lifted the lion heads high, majestically surveying community members right and left, and that’s when we heard a burst of applause from our audience.
Next, our two lions approached the chairman’s podium from two sides, we met at the back of the podium, lifted our heads and gazed at each other, then moved to the sides of the podium, each letting the other pass through. We descended from the podium, and played at frolicking on the sports ground tracks, happily biting and chasing each other’s tails. Our final act was to once again turn our lion heads towards the podium, pay respect three times to our headmaster and guests of honor, then back up to wrap up our lion dance performance.
