You-cheng discussing classical lion dance content with the Dean

At noon, February 22, 2011, our team grouped at the center corridor of our school to watch lion dance and street parade activity records shot by our school. After viewing the material, we felt that we were in possession of enough material to make a promotional video. Our experience with the Lantern Festival evening gala taught us that promotional videos were much more effective than using only posters, as well as being more easily understood by our audience. After some discussion among ourselves, we decided to make these pieces of footage into a promotional video and introduce both our lion dance troupe and our participation in the street parades.

The next day at noon, we regrouped and assigned jobs to members of the team: You-cheng and Chuang-jian were in charge of classical lion dance, Qiao-fang, Hsiang-ping and Yu-na were in charge of Samba lion dance, while Shao-tang, Hui-yu and Hsin-yin were in charge of scripts, music and voice-overs. Our teacher assigned us a daily work schedule and asked us to complete the video within a week. Any of us not in class or at leisure starting the next day were to work in the computer classroom or center corridor, we were also at liberty to borrow notebooks from our teachers whenever we were in need. Next, Director Cheng taught us how to use PowerDirector to produce videos, and we grasped the basic concepts after about an hour of instruction and discussion.

Over the next few days, the entire team spent all our spare hours in the center corridors and computer classroom, and even though we had been assigned different jobs, we covered each other’s portions because we couldn’t all be there at the same time. We selected what footage and photographs to use, discussed with the Dean how we wanted to present our project content, and determined that aside from introductions to our lion dance troupe and the street parades, we would include footage from the interviews we conducted and of us making traditional lion headpieces and Samba lion masks. We kept adding to the content, and quickly a week passed by without us completing the project.

On March 3rd, the Dean called us into a meeting to discuss finalize our video content. The Dean told us that if the video were too lengthy, it would be unsuitable for promotional purposes, but if it were too short, we wouldn’t be able to properly present our project, therefore we came to the decision to discard a few segments, leaving us with a 10 minute video. We discussed arrangement of sequence, then all watched the final version together. The video brought up a lot of memories and emotional, and we felt that everything had been worthwhile.
