Puhsuan Temple is located east of Zunliao Village, making offerings to the Puan Taoist Master and Hsuan Tien God, and is the center of worship for villagers. The Puan Taoist Master’s surname was Dong, therefore his worshippers call him “Master Dong.” In his lifetime, he was a sedan bearer; once, he acted in bravery for the sake of the master he served, and had his feet cut off by the perpetrators of crime, hence you will see no feet on his statue.
The statue of Master Dong was first brought to Taiwan from Mainland China by a villager named Huang, the villagers believed his spirit efficaciously tided them through many hardships, and so he became a deity that all believed in and worshipped. Back in the days of hardship, villagers could not afford to construct a proper temple, and so took turns harboring his statue in their homes. It was not until 1968 that villagers took a collection to construct a temple, and with the addition of another deity of worship, Hsuan Tien God, named the temple after the two of them, Puhsuan.
November 27th of the lunar calendar is Master Dong’s anniversary of birth, on which day villagers must sincerely perform their worship rituals. Our school belongs to the Zunliao Community, therefore on the day of Master Dong’s anniversary of birth, we also adhere to the necessary rituals. On this day, our lion dance troupe positions itself at our school gates to welcome the passing processions, and to invite the Puhsuan Temple Lion Dance Troupe into our school. Troupe members from our school include not only students from senior grades but also the younger members, it is a true mobilization of the entire dance troupe, and all in honor of the coaches who took so many pains to teach us.
We accompany the Puhsuan Temple lion in paying respects to our school, then our lion exchanges greetings with the Puhsuan Temple lion. After passing through the table of worship set up in the school, the two lions from both troupes join the temple fair procession and send them off at the school gates.
