Knowing Manjhou

Manjou Township is located in the southern Tiawan and It’ the remotest administrative division in Taiwan. Although it is located in the Kenting National Park, with the wonderful view, the residents’ life is not as wonderful as the view. Let’s see what Manjou has to offer.

Manjhou Township is located within the Hengchun area, many people are fooled by the name of the place, they thought the weathers in here are spring all seasons, and it suits for everyone to live here, in fact, half of the year katabatic winds is blowing constantly, the wind is strong as typhoon, and it also carried the cold and the wet of northeast monsoon, Manjhou Township pretty much have no economical crops that is growing, it is definitely not a good place for people to live in.

Our town is located at the bottom of the Central Mountain surrounded by mountains in south-eastern part of Taiwan. There stands Reed Mountain, Manjhou Mountain and many others over 400 meters in the east, which overlook the Pacific Ocean and the Bashi Channel. The Old Foshan Mountain ,which is 600 meters, reclines in the west and borders with Hengchun town. Our town is adjacent to Mudan Town and Goushi Mountain is in the northern part of our town. Our town is the administrative region in southernmost Taiwan. Matching with Kaohsiung City and Pingtung City as southern metropolises, 120 km away from them, two and a half hours communication time, it is also the most remote administrative area.

Where is the name of Manjhou come from

Manjhou was named Manutsuru by Paiwan aboriginal people at first and it means stink. This place once had a lot of animals in here and Aborigines do hunting as living. They hunted so many animals to eat, but they don’t know the ways to keep the foods fresh. So they threw the unfinished foods away and left them exposed under the sun, the food become rotten and stinky.

Later, Taiwan was occupied by Japan. Japanese think the meaning of Mang A (mosquito) sounds bad, so they get the same pronunciation “Manjhou”. But local people think the Chinese font of ”chou” is too big, so they remove the radical of ”chou”, named Manshiyu. After the restoration of Taiwan, local people respect the origin meaning of Manjhou and still call it “Manjhou”. That’s where the name of Manjhou come from, isn’t it interesting?
