Economical Lure

From the letter to Taipei citizens, Mayor Hao mentioned the policy of “A Charge of Trash Bags” had reduced 60% of garbage quantity and increased 42% of recycling resources. It had really created the “miracle” of garbage treatment in the world.
According to the report of TDEP, the garbage could be classified into two rough kinds, the recycling and the nonrecoverable. The citizens should buy the city-approved trash bags to pack the nonrecoverable trash. The recycling thing would pass to the recycling truck without charge. In order to economize the use of city-approved trash bags, it was a lure to recycle garbage. The recycling resources could be classified into more than twenty items. The quantity of recycling had increased greatly and reduced the loading of landfill site in Taipei.

 

The Sorting Way of the Recycling

As you know, the policy of “City-approved Trash Bags” has reduced the quantity of garbage greatly and increased the recycling. The recycling days were increased from three days to five days a week in March 15, 2003. The citizens would recycle the flat on Monday and Friday, the solid on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Correct Ways to Recycle Resources

After visiting Sanitation Team and Ciji Recycling Stand as well as listening to the lecture by Mr. You, we found it was not easy to do the work of recycling. There were several things we had to clarify:

I. Since the lunch boxes and cups have glue membranes, they could not be recycled as paper. They are the item singly.

II. The batteries have to be recycled totally because one piece of battery will pollute 600 tons of water, being equal to the quantity one person would use all his (her) life.

III. Pay attention to the fluorescent lamps and the mercury thermometers and don’t break them because they have mercury which is harmful to health.

IV. For plastic bottles, we have to open the bottle top and wash it, and then flatten out the bottle for recycling.

V. The Steps to Recycle Tetra Pak: To pour out the drink →To even up the four angles → Throw away the straw→ To flatten and recycle. The milk and juice package has the same steps for recycling.

The experience in Ciji Recycling Stand was impressive, paper recycling was divided into pure white, light white, color paper, and paper boxes. The more detailed we classified paper categories the more valuable we had.

The recycling in Taipei is a general mobilization of the citizens. The City Government spares no efforts to advance the policy of recycling. Besides, the recycling is popular in the folk. Some organizations have given an impetus to do the recycling thing actively. That is why the recycling resources in Taipei are so vigorous.
