The Society of Wilderness

The Society of Wilderness, established on June 25th, 1995, is an environment preservation group that is constituted by the common people. They are devoted to promoting wilderness preservation in  Taiwan and even in the whole world by encouraging the whole people to attend to this work through natural contact and education. The society involves 8,900 family members, including public officers, civil representatives, researchers, managers of enterprises, teachers and journalist as well as housewives, retirees, students, taxi drivers, carpenters and others from various careers. As a result, it becomes the ecology preservation group involving the greatest amount of members in Taiwan. In the society, they make efforts without political intentions or personal fame and wealth for loving  Taiwan and treasuring the nature. They not only spread the seed of environment preservation when working and staying at home but also attend to activities of natural education and ecology preservation actively and voluntarily, leading to turning the society into the most popularized and energetic ecology preservation organization

Lessons by visit, Jan 21st, 2008

It is the first day of the winter vacation. All of us got up very early for our destination, the Society of Wilderness in  Taichung.

Until visiting the Society of Wilderness, we were not so touched by Green Map that we just felt like accomplishing a work, or an activity. However it really broadens our horizons.

The Society of Wilderness locates in an unknown lane but people who work in the society have great passion for the place we live and beings. Those stories out of slides made by volunteers truly arouse our perception of environment. The most impressive are the pictures of the entrance to the forest, took at the same place. They show that the forest was woody 5 years ago, getting sparser 3 years ago, and became finally bald one year ago. I, eventually, understand the icon with tearful eyes in the Green Map. It symbolizes such phenomenon of withering.

Let’s start with our surroundings! To minimize the area of withering and recreate a green world!

Concepts of the Society of Wilderness

1. Get the wardship and governance rights of wilds through purchase, long-term tenancy, commission or donation to let the wilds remain naturally and to preserve natural species.

2. Promote concepts of natural ecology preservation and provide chances and environment of public natural ecology education.

3. Train nature observers and ecology preservers.

4. Establish a group of lawyers to supervise constitution of national eco-care enactments and policies.

5. Supervise management and operation of national parks and publish “A White Paper of National Park”.

6. Help the government conserve water and soil to preserve natural resources.

7. Boost legislation for natural resources preservation in Taiwan.

Activities of the Society of Wilderness

1. Hold regularly various kinds of conferences, natural experience camps and children’s camps to bring people into the nature and learn something.

2. Publish magazines or books to promote concepts of ecology preservation.

3. Adopt the wilds to map out nature classrooms.

4. Accept invitation from enterprises to interpret their work of nature education.

5. Receive new info of foreign preservation and associate with foreign preservation groups and organizations.

6. Start lessons of narrator training to cultivate nature preservers and to popularize preservation.

 Introduction of Green Map

In Green Map, the most valued is a set of carefully categorized illustration system and detailed guideline. One icon represents one sort of scenery; for example, an apple stands for an organic food store, an elephant represents a zoo and a bird is for observation area of birds and wild animals.

Internationally there are 125 icons in total, sorted into 10 sorts, i.e. commercial activities, culture and design, reproductive resources, information, nature vs. animals, nature vs. plants, nature vs. topography and currents, transportation, city’s basic construction and device, and source of environmental pollution. Each has its own definition in detail.
