***Calligraphy copying experience

Teacher Wen-Chiung introduced the differences and characteristics of various fonts, such as delicate fine lines of the oracle bone script, thick and rounded strokes of the bronze script, complicated structure of the large seal scripts, bilateral symmetry of the small seal script, etc. She also allowed us to practice using the method of copying. As the team members gazed at the copybooks and intensively traced the beautiful writings of the sage, the air was filled with the fragrance of the ink, and our hasty heart gradually settled down. The classroom was hung with the teacher's treasures of study in all directions. For a blink of the moment, I imagined that I was wearing the traditional Manchurian long gown and jacket, like a real calligrapher writing with precision. Nevertheless, when I raised my hand beginning to write, my hand was as heavy as a thousand pounds. Sure enough, calligraphy can't rely solely on copying a template. It requires a lot of hard work to master the essence of calligraphy.

The teacher also asked each one of us to write an inscription on the silk fan, referring to the state we expected to achieve the most. Because there is only one silk fan for each member, we need to be extra careful, planning every stroke one by one. It is very similar to the journey of our life as there are fast-moving hours as well as the slow pondering moment, and we have to choose the right direction, which is crucial because everything will have to be started all over again once we are on the wrong track. Doing calligraphy is an excellent way to help us calm down to re-examine ourselves and come up with an adjustment accordingly as needed.
