Survey and analysis

This research is investigated and analyzed by gender, age, education level and occupation:
1.Gender: There were a total of 400 valid questionnaires collected in this study, including 182 surveys completed by male respondents (45.5%) and 218 by female respondents (54.5%). The statistics also show that more females were exposed to calligraphy, which accounts for 74.6% of the total female respondents.

2.Age: In this study, the age groups were classified into five groups, which were under 19 years old (teenagers), 20-30 (young adults), 31-44 (mature adults), 45-64 (middle-aged), and 65 (seniors). Research results showed that more middle-aged and senior people had been exposed to calligraphy, which accounts for 75.3% of the total respondents followed by teenagers accounting for 10.1% and mature adult 8.2%. The group with the least people who have come in contact with calligraphy was young adults. The statistics indicated that calligraphy education in Taiwan has been interrupted in the past but is currently showing slight improvement. Other figures include that 47.6% of the respondents have done calligraphy for a fixed period but only 1-3 times in a year, while 24.4% of the respondents do not do calligraphy.

3.Education level: 30.2% with education level above master degree, 20.7% with elementary school, 18.4% with university and college, 15.2% with senior high school, and 11% with junior high school. (95.5% of respondents have previously been exposed.)

4.Occupation: military men, public servants and school teachers is the study group with the most people exposed to calligraphy, which accounts for 47.6%; successively, in descending orders, are students (30.4%), freelancers (14.8%), service providers (2.1%), and industrialists and businessman (0.6%). (95.5% of respondents have previously been exposed.)

5.Most of the public do not know the current situation of the calligraphy field (83.6%), nor do they know the curriculum arrangement for calligraphy education in the primary and secondary schools (68.5.5%). It is a general viewpoint that calligraphy culture has declined in importance, and the government pays little attention to calligraphy education (83.9%).

6.Most people affirm that calligraphy is the quintessence of Chinese culture (84.1%), with unique artistic beauty (74.6%), can also enhance personal disposition (60.2%), and agree that primary and secondary schools should arrange regular calligraphy classes every week (71.6%) and that the government should promote calligraphy culture and education (68%).
