In 1887, Ming-chuan Liu, the governor of Taiwan, was granted permission to establish Taiwan Railways and set up the "General Administration of railway commerce of Taiwan", marking the inception of Taiwan Railways. |
The first railway in Taiwan was Keelung ¡VTaipei, opened to traffic in 1891. Construction continued with the line from Taipei southward to Hsinchu. After 105 years, the South Link line was completed in 1992. Until then, the Taiwan Railways was finally completed. There were 6 railways in 1922, and the number increased to 12 in 1932 after expansion. |
In order to ensure the maintenance of locomotives, government roundhouses have been set up all over Taiwan. Among them, there remains only one Roundhouse in Taiwan at the Changhua Locomotive Depot, which is under the management of Taiwan Railways Administration Changhua Locomotive Depot. The construction of roundhouse was completed in 1922 as the base for maintenance, deployment and switch of steam locomotives in the central region of Taiwan Railways. The base is called Roundhouse because its track and roundhouse look like an unfolding fan from the air. |
