Preservation movement

Preservation movement in 1990s

In addition to Changhua Roundhouse, there were originally five roundhouses in

Taiwan, which were located in Taipei, Hsinchu, Chiayi, Kaohsiung and Kaohsiung

Port. Because the Taiwan Railways planned to build a central EMU (electric

multiple unit) maintenance base, the last roundhouse must be demolished. After local

people and railway fans strived for preservation, the Roundhouse was finally

preserved, and the EMU maintenance base was moved to the south of Changhua

railway station.

Status quo:

The Roundhouse in Changhua Locomotive Depot continues to operate the

maintenance of locomotives, and we can still see the operation of locomotives

entering the turntable. Among the six roundhouses, it is now the only living history

left. The roundhouse still has three steam locomotives, CK101, CK124 and DT668,

one steam crane, an electric locomotive E101, a diesel-electric locomotive R50 and a

truck moving machine DL1001, etc. At present, the steam crane, E101, R50 and

DL1001 have been moved to other roundhouses in Changhua Locomotive Depot for

preservation and cannot be seen in Roundhouse.
