On the left side of Ruan ancestral shrine is 一 Ruan family house, named Xiuyi Hall. ”Xiuyi” comes from “Don’t forget ancestor’s instructions when cultivating virtue, the loyal land leaves for the offspring.” It is the couplet on the door of main house, and ancestor’s instruction.
“Gaozhan Yuanzhu” on the lintel of the main house is a congratulating plaque for Mr. Ruan Gang-Meng when he was elected the 12th Changhua County Magistrate.
Outside of the main house is a 一 “Xuan Pavilion.” It is an extension of main house and a pavilion in front of main house. It is used to greet guests and as a buffer zone. When they worship ancestors, it can also used for the setup of the ceremony. Normally it is used as a place to rest, to drink tea and chat without worrying sun or rain.
Xuan pavilion’s carved beams, painted rafters, pillars are exquisite, refined and magnificent.
On the both side of the wall outside the hall are prestigious Japanese Occupied period Majorica tiles, simple and glorious decoration.
In the main hall are full of color painting on the wall, including the works of Lukang Guo faction Guo Qi-Xun and Huangxi Ye Zhen-Cheng. Their themes are both about The Twenty-four Filial Exemplars;calligraphy inscriptions are the work of calligrapher Luo Jun-Lan.
Above the front of main house are four golden rounded seal scripts “Fu, Lu, Shou, Xi,” and above the four words is a rare color painting glass decoration.
We can see from building materials, sculptures, color paintings, wall decorations that Ruan family had great financial power. Their buildings also show unique style.
