Bao-Shu Chuanfang~Nan Ji Xing Hui

There are four words “Nan Ji Xing Hui” inscribed on the horizontal couplet of the door. Its meaning in Ministry of Education’s Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary is:”a birthday idiom which blesses male elders for them to live as long as Southern pole star.”

We speculate that when this house was built or in construction, male elder in the family was quite old, or they wished the elders in the family could live a long life.

In addition, teacher also uses directions of the house to explain. We learn that front side of the main house faces south while the rear side faces north. South Pole star is also at south side of the sky. This explanation makes sense.

The first line of the couplet on the door is:「after relocation, warbler flies freely」and the second line is:「after jumping through Yu door, fish can change in anytime」Two lines correspond with each other. It also celebrates relocation and wishes everyone in the family has great career.

Valuable tiles, flower bird pattern Jiaozhi wares are on the two pillars and the roof. Besides beautiful, we can guess Xie family back then had certain financial power and artistic knowledge.

Although the bird part was already peeling off, we can still see its glorious design when looking closely.

Besides the common horse backs and bird steps on the gable wall of hulong, we are stunned by the elegant and symmetric white flower grain reliefs and octagon design around the ventilation window. (left photo below)

Bai pavilion (Xuan pavilion) (right photo below), the stone plinths and pillars are still intact, not changed under the influence of time. Dougong, wooden pallets and other wooden structures on pillars are very delicate and sophisticated. Although some woods are decayed and broken due to old age and are gradually unable to support roof tiles on Bai pavilion, it simultaneously keeps the original flavor of the house. We sincerely hope this Bai pavilion can be preserve for a long time and will not be demolished or collapsed without care. Its maintenance can follow the old method and return it to its glory days without losing sensation brought by time.

We can tell from the four big words “Baoshu Chuanfang” on the door of the main house that this is Xie family and they wish their offspring can continue to pass down good virtues.

We can still see hearth and chimney in the old kitchen of left hulong house. At the same time, we can see “brick method” used in the house. It supports the roof and makes interior space looks more expansive.

You can tell from the aerial photo that its entire structure is still intact. There is no huge damage in its structure. We hope the government and Xie family can make good plans on how to revitalize this house and to continue passing down its glory.
