About Xiju
Xiju is one of the 36 islands sitting on the Min River estuary. In the past, people describe Xiju as a remote lone island with bad sea condition and infertile soil. However, ROC Army started to plant lots of trees to hide their military devices since 1949. That created Xiju today's beautiful green scene. People of Xiju were fishers from Fuzhou, Changle and Lianjiang. The north-eastern Fujian culture and fishermen's reverence for the ocean created Matsu's unique religion. Their religious culture and temple buildings are different to Taiwan's.
Xiju's hilly topography, windy weather and local material melt into the eastern Fujian building techniques, created a special architectural style. Houses in Xiju have stone walls, small windows and multi-layered roofs. They're called "Breathable houses".
Now, we're going to tell you what Xiju exactly is, starting from her history. Followed by her religious culture -- the temples buildings; and traditional culture – the houses. Come and listen to me talking about Xiju in these three dimensions!
