Schooling
The young and stubborn Jui-Wen Chen gave up on his schooling completely simply because he had a hard time memorizing the texts from the lessons. He skipped school, refused to study, and even burned his schoolbag to show his resentment.
Even so, as the youngest child of his family, he was loved by his parents and grandparents. His parents showed him great affection and never beat him. They always paid attention to him and tried to talk to him patiently, so he would continue his schooling. They convinced him to stay in school until he could graduate from junior high school, which was a key step in a child’s education at that time. However unwilling he was, he stayed in school but kept daydreaming through his days in school.
By the time he was in junior high school, he still did not apply himself and always came in last place in his class. One day, his science teacher, Mr. Lee, called on him in front of the whole class and said, “Jui-Wen Chen, I don’t think you are really stupid. Why can’t you apply yourself more?” Then, the teacher gave him the key to the science lab and trusted him to have it in his safekeeping.
What Mr. Lee did and said had a great impact on Jui-Wen Chen; he inspired Jui-Wen Chen’s interest in science. He started to pay close attention in Mr. Lee’s class and did the experiments thoroughly and carefully. This set the foundation for his studies in physics later when he began his invention.
