The JW Eco-Technology was a genius invention, and Mr. Jui-Wen Chen had no doubt that his JW Pavement is better than other types of permeable pavement. However, he was not very successful at promoting his idea, so he decided to participate in some domestic exhibitions of inventors and let the professionals evaluate his work.
In the beginning, he participated in the exhibitions of inventors in Taiwan, but the judges did not appreciate his work. He later reflected on the results of the exhibition and thought of a few reasons why he was not successful:
1. He did not explain the ideas behind his invention very well.
2. The judges of the exhibitions had thought Jui-Wen Chen was a salesman from a company, and they assumed he attended the exhibition as a way to sell his product.
3. At the time, there was little awareness for environmental protection in the country, so the benefits of the JW Eco-Technology were neither recognized nor appreciated.
4. Many people think that concrete and recycled plastic are not environmentally-friendly materials, but they do not recognize that these two materials can create an environmentally-friendly pavement when used together.
Thus, Jui-Wen Chen began participating in international exhibitions of inventors. His JW Eco-Technology quickly became the focus of these exhibitions. He still remembers one of the most distinguished awards he first received – the 2003 Special Award at the Geneva International Invention Fair.
In our interview with Mr. Jui-Wen Chen, he shared with us that, compared to the certificates or trophies he received, he was most touched and honored by being able to share his ideas with those who appreciate his work. At the Geneva International Invention Fair, the judges and fair attendees truly understood and believed in the JW Eco-Technology’s potential in creating a better environment for the people. Those who appreciate Jui-Wen Chen’s work saw and respected him as an inventor. He clearly recalls someone, either the Dean of the college or a professor, from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences returned to his booth several times wanting to recommend Mr. Jui-Wen Chen for the Nobel Prize. There was also a translator from an area in China who claimed he had friends in the government to help introduce and promote the JW Eco-Technology in China.
Even though the outcome of participating in these exhibitions was quite positive, Mr. Jui-Wen Chen, being the active learner that he is, continued to focus his effort on improving his invention. From the basic structural design of the JW Eco-Technology, he later added the water retention balls. His design was later used to create storage tanks, urban farmlands, and maintain retaining walls. Needless to say, these later features of the JW Eco-Technology won him numerous awards.
In 2015, under the recommendation of the International Invention Award Winners Association, the International Technological University in the United States awarded him “Outstanding Inventor of International Certificate of Doctor of Erudition,” recognizing him for his outstanding performance in the exhibitions of inventors.
The boy who once gave up on schooling and only graduated from junior high school finally, by relying on his own expertise, proves himself an outstanding inventor worthy of a doctorate title.
