Purpose of visit: Observing the "sponge road" in use
The Limen Village, located by a pier, is one of the earliest market district developed in Xizhi District. In the past, the river water would often overflow the embankment and flood the village. At that time, the then Borough Chief Ms. Ling-Yu Fu appealed to the community and inspired people's interest in preserving the environment and its beauty. The community devoted their time and effort on environmental protection and did their best in returning the garbage-filled landscape to a land covered with greenery. The community later became well-known for their low carbon footprint and beautiful landscape. Moreover, in order to solve the water shortage problem during the dry seasons, the community spent the grant they had won on the installation of the sponge pavement in 2012. By April 17, 2013, construction was completed and the road was opened to the public.
After some observation, people in the community started to notice how the sponge road lived up to its name. When it rains, the sponge road absorbed water, filters it, and stores it underneath the pavement. The stored water is not only is good for watering the plants nearby, but it also helps to circulate fresh water for the lotus pond, filling the ecosystem with life. The sponge road also has the advantage of cooling the surrounding area and providing a nice walkway for people of the community. The sponge road of the Limen Village has attracted other communities to learn from their success.
